You can find cheaper cases but you won't find any better. Transporting back and forth to the range is one thing but if you plan on flying with a firearm, Pelican cases are cheap insurance.
I traveled fixing microscopes for 5 years, with my tools flying every week. My Pelican cases survived 5 years of flying, loaded with 50lbs of tools, and suffered only scratches, dents, and dings.
The other guys I worked with usually got cheaper cases. They pretty much had to replace them yearly.
Very few cases are better than a Pelican. Our machines at work, which are XRF (X-Ray Florescent Machines) which cost around $30K are kept in pelican cases when traveling.
the storm hardigg cases are the alternative to pelicans. they tend to leapfrog each other in terms of quality. when one adds a feature, it's not long before the other has it
They did and can be considered equals. Buy the one that you find the slightly better price on, or design that you find to be more attractive, they'll both accomplish the job just fine. From what I have seen, the only case that compares to either is a Zero Halliburton, and they are more costly and IMO still not quite on par (but they do look a lot nicer...if that's a consideration).
As far as finding a Pelican at a decent price, Dvor (Optics Planet sister company) has deals on them from time to time, but you have to register to see the deals, then wait for one to come around (which could be a while).
