Pelosi pledges compromise on assault weapons ban @ 10:29 am by Michael O'Brien

The ball is in Congress's court to craft a compromise in reinstating regulations on assault weapons, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledged Tuesday.

During an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," Pelosi said that the Congress will work to find some middle ground between the previous ban, which expired in 2004, and the precedent laid by the Supreme Court in a ruling enumerating more concrete gunowners' rights last term.

"We have to find some level of compromise," Pelosi said, citing 53 victims of gun violence nationwide in less than a month. "And we have to rid the debate of the misconceptions people have about what gun safety means."

"Yes, it is," the Speaker said when asked if the ball is in Congress's court now that Democrats control the White House. "And we are just going to have to work together to come to some resolution."

Pelosi indicated that new regulations might entail registration and prohibitions on transporting some firearms across state lines.

The Speaker also expressed displeasure at the attachment of a gun rights provision to legislation that would grant Washington, D.C. a voting member of Congress.

"Right now, we have the debate in Congress over the District of Columbia wanting a vote on the floor of the House, something we all want. That's a civil rights issue," she said, pledging to find "middle ground" on the issue. "And, yet, they want to put a gun…bill, attach that to that. I don't — I don't think that that should be the price to pay to have a vote on the floor of the House."

She sounds like she's in a very weak position, if you parse what she's saying. It sounds like she wants to appease certain left-wing groups who support her, while knowing that there's little chance she can do much.

She's not exactly the most popular person among the average Democrat voter, either.

This will be interesting, but I suspect the uphill battle will be theirs more than ours.

This is a definite change in the wind from just a month ago. The Dems now believe they have total control and are going to try to pass something.

Man, the guns they're trying to regulate don't even have to be involved in a crime to get attacked.

Ford truck drivers are running people over, quick, let's regulate Chevys!

I get quite the opposite from her bluster. She's not talking like someone in a position to pass something.

HR45: ZERO cosponsors. If she wanted to get something started, she could sign on any time she wants.

That's reality. There's no real support, not even from Pelosi. It's all pandering to her far-left district that most of California can't stand, either.

Pelosi is full of BS -- and she often is.

Oh, the irony.

Agree 100% with your assessment. However, that is probably because of the pro-gun activism by people like us ... keep up the pressure. Stay on the offensive for our rights, don't let up. Keep writing your senators and representatives.

We may be on the way to that coveted 3rd rail status, but we aren't there yet. And we won't get there if we think for a minute that the winds won't begin blowing in our faces tomorrow.

Speaking of Pelosi, I'm not sure how she got re-elected. Nationwide, her job approval rating is in the single digits!!! :neener:

52 victims of gun violence last month... I wonder how many people were raped, mugged, victim to drunk drivers, or otherwise attacked in that same time period?

AB is probably right. She's most definitely getting screamed at in both ears. Brady freaks in one ear and "pro-gun" Dems, clinging to the office that their gun friendly constituency elected them to, in the other.

Hope she listens to the right screams.

Is there video of this anywhere?

52 victims of gun violence last month...

Another thought ... notice how they've scaled back the horror/evilness quite a bit from what we might have expected 20 years ago? 20 years ago the claim would have been "52 victims of gun violence every hour". They would have rolled into the figure every death involving a firearm ... in addition to murders committed by criminals, the number would have included suicides, accidents, police shootings of criminals, self defense use, etc...anything to inflate the number.

Pelosi used the word "compromise" ... Princess Pelosi. Princesses don't compromise.

We've got her on the ropes boys, don't stop swinging now!

Keep the pressure on your congress critters, keep the letters flowing to congress and the media, keep dragging newbies out to the range to shoot your EBRs.

Agreed 100%.

I did not mean to dismiss the real threats to our rights posed by this woman and her minions (not just gun rights). I just thought we should focus on securing a victory, not cowering in fear at her empty words.

Hell, 40 people died from taking TYLENOL in the last month, if it was an average month. Many more were permanently damaged.

The picture of Pelosi being punched repeatedly by a boxer makes me laugh. I wonder if her face would bounce around, or just pop after all that plastic surgery.

jad0110: "We may be on the way to that coveted 3rd rail status, but we aren't there yet."

Interesting observation. I suspect that a decade or two from now, the subjects of Britain, Australia and other recently unfree countries subject to increasingly irrational regulation and monitoring particularly concerning guns will look on in amazement after America has established a political paradigm of "hands off guns" unthinkable a few decades prior.

This is worth the fight, fellas. It is far from over, but we are making serious political headway. The remaining antis are living fossils like Kennedy, dead like the late and unlamented Metzenbaum, or frozen in political fear like Pelosi.

Here's a compromise for you - enforce laws we already have, allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves, and address the root causes of violence, not the symptoms.

I honestly can't decide if Pelosi is an idiot or just a liar. Something tells me she doesn't really believe the BS she spouts. All she cares about is getting and keeping power.

alemonkey, you are dead on with your assessment "All she cares about is getting and keeping power."

She knows that she won't be speaker after 2010 if she even puts much credence on more gun control. The fact is that there's enough pro-gun Democrats in Congress that a new AWB is dead on arrival for the most part (Exhibit A: HR45).

However, we must remain vigilant or they might try to squeeze something in through the back door.

On the same token, I don't believe gun owners should assume having any sort of an advantage is reason to let up or become lax.

They may have an uphill battle getting something through on us, though I would suspect it is not as uphill for them as some would like to think, but stranger things have happened. We can ill afford to drop the ball and give up a narrow 4th quarter lead.

I would caution everyone not to get too excited just because HR45 has floundered.

This is not the first time this piece of legislation has been attempted. It fails because it is too extreme; requiring the registration of every handgun in America basically.

So just because that thing continues to die horrible deaths does not mean there is no taste for gun control, that one is just too much off the deep end no matter who is running Congress.

that one is just too much off the deep end no matter who is running Congress.

I don't disagree, but it contains exactly what Pelosi claims she supports.

My point is not to let up, but to go for the win.

Something else... I've always wondered why the antis never suggest expanding NFA spec's to include some "assault weapon" features, instead of the rather weird AWB. I mean, even if you supported the thing (which I obviously didn't) you had to admit it didn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

During the AWB, as I understand it, NFA firearms were not subject to the AWB, i.e. you could have a 14.5" M4gery with a flash hider, M4 stock and bayonet lug, as long as you had a Tax Stamp, but not a 16" M4gery.

Pelosi indicated that new regulations might entail registration...
We've seen how that worked with full-autos, i.e., set up a registry, close it at some later date, choke off the supply and reduce the number of guns at large.

How do you "compromise" on an assault weapons ban??????

They're "sort of" banned?
Or is she talking about allowing some guns ... or features.

Maybe the "thing that goes up.":neener:
