I am, right now, working on an AMT Longslide Hardballer.
I have always heard the rumors of "Galling" but had never actually seen the problem with my own eyes until I started working on this particular pistol.
Galling occurs when two steels of dissimilar hardness come in contact with each other in repetition with friction between the pieces causing the surface areas to smear and blend into one another.
AMT was the first company to experiment with sand casting techniques using stainless steel as the medium.
It was a learning experience the whole gun industry, actually all heavy industry, and many things were learned.
Zach is correct, new production 1911 handguns produced from modern 'stainless' gun steels do not have issues with galling.
Owned a stainless mil-spec springer for two years and have never seen a sign of galling.
I have never experienced any failures with this pistol, either and it is very accurate. Amazing..the two Colts I used to own...I cannot say they were as reliable or trouble-free.
With any of the Springfield pistols, all that's needed is a lube
with Mobil-1. That should resolve any issues with galling in
stainless steel handguns.
I have the parkerized Mil Spec, and am looking forward to picking up a stainless Mil Spec soon, so I can modify it a little at a time, without having to worry about refinishing. Good to hear no one has had any problems with galling, though I would not have expected any such problem from Imbel steel.
Onmilo: I'll admit my ignorance. I've never been absolutely certain what the heck galling is (as it pertains to pistols) and have been too embarassed to ask. Your explanation was very clear and very welcome. Thanks. I, too, have a SA Mil-Spec in SS. I used to have a parkerized Mil-Spec. The ss one that I currently have was finished better than the parkerized one. Parkerized model had a few examples of inattention to details. The slide to frame fit is better on the SS. It is very tight. The out-of-the-box trigger was better on the parkerized model. Not knocking the parkerized model. Just like the SS model a little better. Will like it even more after I get a thousand or so rounds through it to smooth the trigger up.
I own a government hardballer. I'm thinking about having it accurailed and building a sleeper. The biggest problem is that having it railed would cost more than what I paid for the gun...
