The thread on MLK owing a gun and or being for self defense (which was new info for me! ) got me to thinking about a list of those people others (especially the anti crowed) are surprised to learn are/were in fact pro self defense/pro gun.

A list of those people would be useful with quotes (especially with cites!) very useful. Here's mine:

"Though defensive violence will always be 'a sad necessity' in the eyes of men of principle, it would be still more unfortunate if wrongdoers should dominate just men." - St. Augustine A.D. 354-430

"If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." -- The Dalai Lama, (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times) speaking at the "Educating Heart Summit" in Portland, Oregon, when asked by a girl how to react when a shooter takes aim at a classmate

"Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest." -Mohandas K. Gandhi

"I have been repeating over and over again that he who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honor by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully." - Mahatma Gandhi (Young India, 11-10-1928, p342)

"Finally, I contended that the debate over the question of self-defense was unnecessary since few people suggested that Negroes should not defend themselves as individuals when attacked. The question was not whether one should use his gun when his home was attacked, but whether it was tactically wise to use a gun while participating in an organized demonstration." - "Where Do We Go From Here:Chaos or Community?" by MLK Jr.

"As we have seen, the first public expression of disenchantment with nonviolence arose around the question of "self-defense." In a sense this is a false issue, for the right to defend one's home and one's person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law." - "Where Do We Go From Here:Chaos or Community?" by MLK Jr.

Who else would you and or the anti types be surprised to learn are/were not sheep and knew non violence does not = victim?

Just because they own a gun does NOT mean they advocate the same for others.

Many liberals own firearms yet try to ban them for the rest of the population.

Heck the head of the Violence Policy Center (VPC), Josh Sugarman has an 01 FFL (dealers liscense)... yet he and his little .org have the ear of every politican on capital hill and were instrumental in getting many "Home based FFLs" revoked over the years.

Then there is HOLLYWOOD.

Which is why I quoted him:

"...for the right to defend one's home and one's person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law."

Did you read the quotes?

The Dalai Lama from Seattle Times May 15 said:
"But if someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, he said, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun. Not at the head, where a fatal wound might result. But at some other body part, such as a leg."

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20010515&slug=dalai15m0

That's the complete quote of what he said.

However, I think the we and the Dalai Lama could compromise and agree on the torso. ;D

I think that last part shows what the Dali Lama really knows about the subject..... because a fatal wound might result from being shot anywhere....

So I said, "Lama, how about something for the effort."

And the Dali Lama said, "Gunga, gunga galunga." Which means "When you die, on your death bed you will receive total conciousness."

So I've got that going for me, which is nice.
