My Girlfriend is looking for some pepper spray. We've been over avoidance and awareness. A firearm is not an option currently, it seems like spray may work for the time being.

I'm looking to find out what the best option is as far as pepper spray. Who makes the best currently and the like.

Foxlabs makes some pretty potent stuff...hottest available in the market. They claim "true 5.3 million SHU product in a 2% solution". All that I can attest to is that I have tested a bunch of them with some friends of mine...and the Foxlabs was always the "hottest" by far to everyone who was sprayed.

I recommend against getting the foam spray pattern. Get a stream or cone stream pattern.

I like the keychain pepper spray "batons" because of their flexibility. My wife carries triple action mace, the pepper spray baton and the cat thing (also pictured below). The most important thing to keep in mind is that the pepper spray virtually has to be in her hand. There will be little or no time to grab it later as the action happens so fast. Drilling her on having it at hand / in hand and being aware that it is there is the best thing.

You can order these items online at http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com

I LOVE those keychains mtb2000 . . . gotta get one for the wife and daughter to replace their "executive ice scrapers". . .

I carried Fox for about 6-8 months. I'd ordered 10 or 12 to get free shipping and sold them to the gals I worked with at cost. Then another female friend needed one and I gave her mine. I think they were about 12 bucks at the time. Picked up a Sabre triple content key chain size for about 6 bucks a few weeks ago.

Like mtb said: Ya' gotta' have it IN YOUR HAND!

Nice to have an alternative to a firearm; every situation doesn't warrant shooting the "assailant"!

Stay safe.

1. Fox Labs is some seriously wicked stuff. I know this from personal experience. (No, I'm not a former assailant. Police Academy training)

2. She must have it in her hand when TSHTF, not somewhere lost in the bottom of her purse. This was said thrice now, but bears repeating anyway.

3. She should know how quickly it works, how far it will shoot, and what it's like to have some discharged near her. This means someone (probably you) should 'attack' her and get hosed, keeping at it until no longer able to function.

Have fun with that. It's a labor of love. ;)

Kimber is making a pepper spray now - looks very hi tech - suppossedly shoots out much faster.

The Kimber thing uses a pyrotechnic charge. It's interesting, but expensive and only 2 shots.

What's the verdict on these sprays that combine OC with CS/CN?

The Kimber one is also flat, which I like. I handled a non-functional training copy. It would carry well in a pocket.
The round ones are hard to disguise or carry concealed, and most of the key chain ones I've seen don't really have enough spray in them to make me feel confident.

+1 on the Fox labs pepper spray. My 26 year old daughter dumped the contents of her keychain unit into the face of a guy who cornered her in a deserted train station one night. She was unharmed but the BG was blinded and gasping for air.

How are the ASP key ones? I realize they do not shoot as far as the Fox Labs, but the seem to be a good choice as the can also be used as a baton. Anybody have experience with these?

The ASP Street Defender (largest of the 3 offered models) will do 13 ft...optimally, anyway. I love mine, but have (happily) only sprayed it with an inert cartridge. I've actually tried to talk wifey into spraying me with the OC (once-only, of course), but amazingly, she won't. It's the best "free shot" offer she'll ever have!:p

It carries well for me tucked into pants parallel to groin line with keys hanging over belt, and the keys make for a quick indexing if needed. I like having two LTL options in one package as well, as I've taken a bit of kubaton training.

Thanks for the reply, I am thinking I will get a couple. Never know when you just may need something.

I'll be acquiring some pepper spray shortly, and I'd like to test it out. Anyone know how long the effects tend to last? Is there any risk of permanent eye damage? What's the best way to stop the effects after I'm convinced it works? Thanks guys.

definetly practice

I had lots of practice in SF, try and be aware of how the wind is blowing!
Fog can blow back, not fun.
Thats why some prefer foam as it doesn't blow around as much.
The really small "jogger" size is not that good.
The bigger the can the better, make sure it won't go off accidently,(SIC)

+1 gunsmith. pepper spray is not easy to use. a gun is much much easier... OC takes practice. oh, and dont buy cheap crap OC no matter now many SHU it supposed to be. schoville units are completely arbitrary and mean almost nothing.

in my work we run across oc a lot. many times ive walked into a fight where OC was used and when its cheap you dont even feel a thing... a tingling in your nose is about it.

I'm not sure of who makes it, but I have heard of a new "gel" type spay that is supposed to be even better than the foam stuff because it is stickier, and can't be thrown back like the foam can (supposedly anyway, my only personal experience is with streaming OC.)

Do NOT get anything that sprays in a fog or cone formation, the blowback with a regular stream is bad enough, and those are even worse.

Foam OC spray works well in confined areas. Inside a building it would be ideal. I work in a large jail and have used OC spray many times on all kinds of people. OC works most of the time but there have been several exceptions and some folks can just shake it off and keep fighting so you have to go to plan B. For general everyday carry I would go with a general duty size spray of 10% OC. If you are planning to carry the spray have an idea how well it works. A spouse or friend may be willing to help you. Before you pratice have a garden hose, dish detergent and a towel. If your spray works your assistant will need all three to decontaminate himself. If your assistant gets a full blast to the face with little results go with another brand.
A good OC spray should slam the eyes shut to the point that they cannot be pried open with fingers. They should also get the sensation that they just went bobbing for french fries at McDonalds. Coughing, gagging, snot flowing and extreme pain is a great sign the product is working.

Is OC/pepper spray legally able to be carried by those under 18?

For example, if my daughter babysits somebody, while obviously she can't carry a gun, can she slip something in her belt, (legally?)...

I'm not sure what the law is on that stuff...

I think that is a silly oversimplification. A gun isn't "easy" to use. For one thing, getting flash sight pictures, practicing concealed draws, speed reloads and putting rounds on target under stress is not easy. Then there is the psychological knowledge that a double tap to the chest with a .380 / .38 / 9mm / .40 / .45 will most likely result in a dead perp...

I will pepper spray with impunity. Perp to close to me, spray. Dog looking aggressive, spray.... I am not that bad, but the end point is that largely, no harm done.

Also, go do some research on Grizzly spray. That stuff has bee proven as effective / more effective than a gun when used correctly. Point to eyes, spray. That is pretty easy.

Do a search on yahoo / google typing something about Pheonix+pepper spray law and / or arizona+pepper spray law. That should bring up what you need. BTW, if I cop arrested my daughter because she was 16 and had pepper spray.... I would be in high temper...
