Mossberg makes a 500 with the youth stock (Bantam) in 12 gauge. It has a 24" barrel and is ported.

I am not too keen on the porting and curious is 24" is a weird size. Any thoughts?

(home and just fun clay pigeon use)

I have a 500 with ported barrels. If you shoot buckshot the ports will clog quickly. You can clean the ports when they are fouled with plastic using a pipe cleaner or small wire brush. You have to be careful if you lean against anything for brace. The ports will leave their mark on tree bark or painted surfaces. I can't say if they do anything or not. I have shot a pump all my life. Plus I am big fellow.

I can't answer your question about the pistol grip. If someone brings a pistol grip in my house I hope they have a buyer for it. They are not leaving a pistol grip here. I know I can not shoot a shotgun like a pistol or from the hip.

Assuming it is ported, are the ports in a place that would allow a gunsmith to cut the barrel to eliminate them and still have a good length?
Thanks!

Not unless you want to cut the choke tube threads off and have no choke.

Or pay $100 - $200 to have it re-threaded for choke tubes again.

I have a couple of ported shotguns. I am not sold that the porting actually does anything, but I also don't find it to be a problem as long as you are wearing hearing protection. I personally would want the longest barrel you are comfortable with if you are going to shoot clays with it.

with light loads i'm not sure it much matters, but with mag buckshot, mag goose loads it seems to for me, keeps the muzzle down, but i have a 28" barrel. My slug barrel is 24" and ported, i'm pretty convinced it helps there. It comes back so strait to the shoulder that i can see the sabots falling down range through the scope.

I hate ports. So do a lot of my fellow hunters. On the range it doesn't matter. But you are not hunting in the blind or the field with any of our dogs. They do increase the noise considerably, especially for anyone or anything not directly behind the gun.

Kings don't get elected by majorities. Twice. :)

I am new to shotguns. Choke tube? What is this? (i know, so newbie).

Not planning on slugs...Do I want smooth?

Thanks for the help guys
