This is a big question on my mind, my father in-law told me about how his neice was legal to carry at age 16 (a couple years back)... Is this possible in the "gun friendly" states?

If it is, I would assume that some type of course or seminar would be required and then a test+fee to be liscensed and legal.

Help me out?

In Wyoming its 18 years old.

The sheriff of the applicant's county of residence may, at his discretion, submit a written report to the division recommending the issuance of a concealed firearm permit to an applicant between eighteen (18) and twenty-one (21) years of age who meets the requirements specified in this section. The written recommendation shall specifically state that the sheriff has personal knowledge of the applicant's situation or circumstances which warrant the issuance of a concealed firearm permit. The division may issue a permit to carry a concealed firearm to those individuals between eighteen (18) and twenty-one (21) years of age under circumstances that a reasonable, prudent person would believe warrant the issuance of a permit to carry a concealed firearm. The decision to issue a concealed firearm permit shall be based on the satisfactory completion of the requirements of this section and any voluntary written report offered by the sheriff of the county of the applicant's residence which shall clearly state the reasons the applicant should be issued a permit. The applicant may submit a written report containing relevant facts for consideration by the division.

IIRC, in Montana young adults aged 14 and up may carry a firearm without parental supervision.

This mainly applies to hunting, but not all hunting requires a license and associated firearms safety course. Rabbits, snakes, gophers, coyotes, etc are all unregulated "vermin".

In VT you could if you could get a handgun through a private sale (or from a parent) at 16 (under 16 you need parental consent to have a firearm). I don't know what the min. age in Alaska is off the top of my head, but you wouldn't need a permit there anyways...

In alaska, I can legally posess any firearm (that is legal to own) at age 16 which includes "assault weapons"...

But posession in public is my concern... this is an open carry state to anyone over 21, and I'm wondering if there's any certification/liscense that allows a person to carry under that age.
Pistols in perticular.

I doubt it, the permit there is just for if you want to carry in other states that recognize it. You don't need a permit there for either concealed carry or open carry if you can legally own the gun and meet the age requirement. According to packing.org (if the info. is still correct) it's 21.

That said I doubt you'd have much trouble in most parts of AK unless you're up to trouble. It'd be kind of stupid not to have a good gun with you up there in much of the state.

Well, i live fairly deep in an urban area that has been known for being flurried with hostile drunks or robberies/burglaries...

so, there tends to be alot of Law Enforcement activity in the area, and I rrrreally dont want to break the law(s).

Its not neccisary for people under 21 to carry because people under 21 aren't ever in danger.

duh.
well, keep in mind... some of those people over 21 are like toddlers around guns, especially if SHTF.. where as I might could actually make a difference

besides, the life I lead is different from any under 21-year old..

^ I think The Deer Hunter was being sarcastic with his comment about no one under 21 needing a handgun ;) . The states that I reside and know most about (NY and TX) don't allow anyone under the age of 21 to CCW, but other states may differ. If your purpose is to carry around an urban area in Alaska I don't think that's legal, but I feel if you were out in the bush and carrying no one would bother you as I would almost expect anyone out in the Alaskan bush to be packing.

haha yea, I couldnt help but to reply... I was bored haha

And yea, out in the bush, it is really a good idea to remain armed... if for nothing, those misquitos would make good plinking targets hahaha

last summer I was down in salcha with my uncle in-law and I went out exploring the woods with a semi-auto .22...

It was out on the river, and there were tons of (old) salmon in the waters, so it was good to have some form of protection in case a bear were to come along...

Out there im not worried, but around town.... mmmm yea.

There is no minimum age for a permit in NH, and I remember a story from a few years ago about a 16 year old who carried. If I recall correctly he worked for his family's business handling a lot of cash.

Cities in AK are not allowed to forbid carrying.

And I'd get something bigger than a .22 for bears. Something along the lines of a 44 mag or at least a 45 (I won't be carrying my .36 Navy when I move to AK, much as I like it as a defense gun against people if I ever need to, it ain't much good for a grizzly). A 22 would kill a wolf if aimed well (though, wolves aren't known for stopping the fight if injured and not dead yet so a bigger gun is still better) if you had trouble with them, but bears are another story...

Concealed should mean just that, concealed. If you keep yourself out of trouble you should be fine. You should try avoiding anyone who is obviously drunk or aggressive anyways. You have a right to defend against them, but it's still a lot easier to avoid trouble and the legal stuff that comes with it.

As far as I know, you could carry a rifle or shotgun around with you there, without any legal problems under 21, if it doesn't defeat the purpose...

Note to self: Alaska native recommends .22LR for bear protection.

Check. Gotcha.

Living in Anchorage defintely doesn't count towards being Alaskan and neither does most of Fairbanks.

That said, .22LR is better than nothing.

I do not know if things are still the same, but in Arizona when I was growing up, you were allowed to carry a weapon openly if you were conducting ranch or farm work at age 14. At 18 you could carry openly anywhere where it was legal, and at 21 you could get your CCW permit.
