I have one of the "Excellent" 98/29's I have twice flirted with selling but couldn't pull the trigger (ouch!) on moving it when it came down to it. I would like to sight it in with some commercial loads for eastern whitetail hunting. Anybody got any recommendations? We touched off a couple of rounds, impromptu, while shooting my K31 a week or so ago, at around 80 yards, and looks like she shot way high and off our target. Thanks.cwd

Most any commercial 8MM should be OK assuming correct headspacing. Your K31 was shooting high because many/most military bolt actions are designed for 300+ yards. Some folks install a higher front sight to correct for this.

US made commercial 8x57JS STINKS and should be avoided. If you're using quality Euro made rounds you may just need to adjust windage by drifting the front sight. What type of ammo was it?

What is a or some of the Euro ammo referenced? Also, my post was almost criminally ambiguous: We broke out the Mauser and she shot way high, not so the K31.cwd

Wolf Gold or PRVI Partisan (same stuff, different box) is good hunting ammo when the softpoint load is used. It's accurate, powerful (196gr @ ~2400fps), and is loaded in good brass if you reload. The main issue with US 8x57mm is that it's mostly very underloaded for the 1888 Commission rifle, which used a .318 bullet (as opposed to the Mauser's .323), and operated at much lower pressure. The PRVI/wolf gold is loaded to the European spec, for the K98 style rifles.

Thanks, KaiserBen, that's some of what I needed. I assume this brand is proper diameter-I now remember reading somewhere that specifics for the 8mm changed way back when.cwd

There were some Mauser's built before 1905 that were .318,.320 grv.to grv.
You won't find many around and ammo is no longer manufactured in that
old cal. The Persians are Czech contract rifles built in the 1930's. They
are .323's with good strong receivers. New ammo is all .323.
