Honestly I'd be happy with any remington 700 with a synthetic stock and a free floating 24 or 26 inch heavy barrel. Its pretty hard to screw up as long as you stick to that formula.

I've handled savages and was not impressed with the lack of fit and finish compared to the 700s they just seemed rough. I'm sure they're an alright rifle, but the 700 seems to be a bit more smoothed out.

My friend just bought an FN PBR. It seems like a pretty tough rifle so far and capable of decent accuracy. The stock trigger is a bit heavy for my tastes and I would rather have a non-fluted heavy barrel instead of the fluted tappered one that is on it. I guess I'm just used to remington 700s.

Sporting arms had a Remington 700 with a stainless 5R barrel and green H&S stock in stock a couple weeks ago. That be my first choice followed up by a 700p.

well this poll has made me consider my options more and now i am leaning more towards the Savage. contacting my local gun peddlers to get a price check and availability

Pgeleven;

There wasn't a category for: None of the above. Therefore, I wasn't able to vote.

CB900F - i know, i wish i could have had a 100+ list there so everyone could pick their most favorite flavor, but i felt the more options that were on there the less i would learn from it. the purpose of this poll was actually very practical for me in a sense that out of all the guns i looked at in my price range those were the ones that i had left to choose from, and just needed some extra opinions and votes to push me in the right way.
now that i wasnt able to order the SPS Tac, i tried for the Savage LE2, and its not listed on the computers at the larger dealers up here, but they DID find me a Savage 10FP Folding Choate. i think i may go for that which is pretty crappy since it wasnt even included on the poll options.

has anyone had the pleasure of playing with one of these yet?

I was looking at this too. You can now pick up a 700SPS for about the same as a Savage.
Savage advantages are you can do more work yourself, like changing the barrel, but there is not as much aftermarket support.
Remington 700, well, if it is made for a bolt action, you can probably get it the sky and your wallet is the limit.
I am left handed, which causes its own problems so I was pricing how much it was to order a Savage. Ended up finding a LH Remington at around the same prices I was getting quoted for the Savage. Picked it up from Gun Jail on Saturday.:)

i agree with the aftermarket comment. im just swapping out the stock, putting a DedNutz mount on the top and some moderately priced glass. with the accu-trigger and oversized bolt knob on the savage i doubt i will need anything further from the aftermarket.
i REALLY wanted the SPS tactical but nobody up here has one on the shelf, and contacting the distributer informed me that they only did a limited production this year, so the only place i can find the SPS-T now is on the online auctions at a $50-$150 markup.

With all of the information on the remys coming up short in comparisons why would you pay more for a remy than you would for a ruger or savage 12??

Obeone;

I just bought a new Tikka, LHB, .30-06, for $399.99, delivered price.

I'm an unabashed fan of Savage rifles. I've had a couple Remingtons that were just as accurate, but cost more. The Remingtons were prettier guns, but held no accuracy edge over the cheaper Savage rifles. I'm down to three centerfire rifles now, an AR and two Savages in .308 and .223.

+1 with LG&M's recco. My model 7 Remington is extremely accurate, is light in weight, and the short barrel makes it easy when hiking up the side of a brush covered mountain. I purchased mine at a gunshow for 3 bills, put a really nice scope on it and laser sighted it in to where I can take the orange dot outta a shoot-n-see at 100 yards.

CB900F,
Did you have to order it or was it in a store?
Sounds like a good deal. DO you plan on changing anything in the future?
A shop in SD actually have a couple of LH 700s in stock right now so I picked one up.
The last gun show here also had a couple of LH bolt rifles for sale. First time I had seen one at the show for years.

rifle ordered

i went ahead and placed an order yesterday for the Savage 10FP .308 with folding choate. should be in within 3-4 days. optics and scope mount orders have also been placed. midwayusa had a 30 day backorder on the deadnutz rings so i had to order directly from the dealer. will let you know when things start rolling in and i hope to have it firing by next weekend!

i got the folding stock model for $795 out the door (take another $20 off for my L.E. rebate, plus another $50 for savage mail-in rebate). im still kinda bummed about the unavailability of the SPS, and the 10FP-LE2 wasn't available either, so i went with the next best thing. i hope to get you guys a good range report by next weekend. ill be feeding it Federal Gold Medal 168gr BTHP for its initial zeroing.

A quick check at Whittaker shows the cz 550 at $632. That would be my choice unless I wanted to burn some money and go for the Kimber. By the way, on a discussion board an original post merely starts a discussion. Posters asking questions here, in my experience, get plenty of useful feedback so shouldn't be grumpy when the "discussion" veers off in a way that to them might be irrelevant.

1) Are you looking for something that is painted black, looks tactical, that will make your friends envious?

2) Are you looking for something that will group tighter than any factory rifle you've ever shot, but which looks fairly ordinary, like, maybe, a prairie dog gun?

Look at http://benchrest.com/shooterscorner/the_list.html.

It's owned by a guy named Bob White, and if he says something is so, it is.

Regardless, you want something with an adjustable trigger.

A -good- adjustable trigger.

bogie - i dont think ill need a trigger much better than the accu-trigger provided with the rifle. and the gun is already black, ive done a duracoat job that worked out in my favor. i think if ANYTHING, i would coat it with HK black, but i doubt i will paint it.

The savage.

But Get one with a Wood stock. a regular 11G will be just as accurate as the LE model, it just doesn't have the dubiously valuable bells and whistles.

I have a buddy who has the savage police sniper rifle and it is sweet it has the accu trigger which is just absolutely awesome :D:D:D:D:D:D

+1.

I just held the .308 I want last night.

An old Model 70 Carbine. Think Model 7, but a tad slimmer, polished steel, and a much better action.

Y'all can keep the plastic fantastic bolt guns. (I do like AR's, etc.)
