Been trying to put my thoughts on my Self defense philosophy into a format I can share with others.
Here it is. Tell me what you think. It is not carved in stone and I am open to all suggestions!

I use the acronym STARE W

S = Situational awareness. Be aware of what is around you, and how it is
developing, and how it will affect you. In a static situation like the home,
keep thinking and re-evaluating your plan.
T = Train with all your weapons of choice. Create a layered defense, Become
proficient using your brain, hands, impact weapons, knives, and guns.
Think about other things that can be improvised weapon in a given
situation.
A = Avoid potential trouble. Blend in. Keep your mouth shut.
R = Remove yourself from the area, run, walk, drive.
E = Escape or evade from the problem, if you can

and the W is

W = Win if fighting is your only option.

That will be hard to improve on... Simple, clear, and to the point. Mind if I borrow it?

Respectfully,

Some good thinking there, Doc. Very clear, concise and simple. Developing and absorbing a personal philosophy of self defense is IMHO a critical step, all too often overlooked or neglected by many who own and/or carry weapons for personal defense.

A short while ago my wife and I spent a weekend with our oldest neice. She had decided to get her NC CCW permit, and wanted a shotgun to keep at home as well. She had little experience with a shotgun, and so came down east from the western NC mountains for a weekend visit with us to learn how to run a defensive shotgun. She wanted a good grounding in NC self defense law as well, which my wife provided.

We spent a good deal of time on the proper mindset necessary for self defense. I gave her a copy of Jeff Cooper's Principles of Personal Defense ( http://www.paladin-press.com/product/772/27 ) to take home with her, and we discussed several other resources available on the web:

http://www.defense-training.com/quips/2003/19Mar03.html

A sound philosophy is the foundation for self defense- without one, the entire structure cannot stand. Sounds as if you have a good basic one working for you.

Great post, doc!

All important steps to remember, especially S.

Everytime I've had a close one, it was because I was not paying attention to situational awareness.

Having a layered defense is critical. Those times I was cought out, it was too close range for me blackthorn, or it was in the car as I was getting out, and to get it would have ment reaching back into it, leaving myself open. Thank the lord above for Cross pens and Gerber LST's.

STARE W.

Good to remember.

Thanks guys. I am honored at the response

These little projects are keeping me buzy during my recovery from neck surgery got a couple more months to go.

DARK SOLDIER feel free to use and pass on

Good stuff, Doc. As w/ DarkSoldier I'd like to borrow w/ your permission.

You've done a great job of getting points across while coming up with a great acronym.

Well done!

Thanks,
DFW1911

Nobody needs to ask permission to use!!!!
I dont want any credit, I just hope it helps somebody some day

Use it, modify it to fit your situation, but most importantly - pass it on.

How about:

STINK.

S-Situation
T-Training
I-Intuition (use it)
N-Not being an ass
K-Kill, or be killed (that's your last resort).

I also think people who sit around and develop a personal philosophy of self defense and make up cute acronyms have way too much time on their hands.

Touche bubba,
no offense taken.
I do have too much time on my hands by virtue of being in a neck brace, having a useless left arm, and facing months of rehab from an injury. And if any of this helps some one so much the better.
Have a nice, and god bless you
Doc

Excellent thoughts Doc!

I also like the stuff on www.cornerdcat.com! Be aware of threats and get away if possible without detection or confrontation. But, if confronted and cornered, be able to fight intelligently, fiercely, effectively and decisively!

Hope your healed up & back in the saddle soon!
