PETA to buy stock in Outback Steakhouse, Applebee's

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is set to acquire stock in Outback Steakhouse and casual dining chain Applebee's, according to a report from CNN.

PETA currently owns shares of casual dining chain Denny's and Chili's parent Brinker International, as well as stock in Austin, Minn.-based Hormel Foods, Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson Foods, and Pittsburgh, Texas-based Pilgrim's Pride.

Calling it a "reinvigorated strategy," PETA said for the first time it is vigorously purchasing stock in the leading meat suppliers.

"We're taking on Wall Street," said PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich. "We're buying 50 percent over the minimum number of shares required to submit a shareholder resolution."

Tom Agan, managing partner with Prophet, a San Francisco-based brand and marketing consultancy, noted the concern about PETA's strategy. "There's a real concern in the foodservice industry over PETA, especially since it has gained traction in the marketplace following the recent settlement with Whole Foods Market," he said.

Whole Foods Market announced last month that it would become the first major grocery chain to adopt humane animal treatment standards. PETA said it campaigned against Whole Foods for two years requesting that it reevaluate its animal treatment standards.

"That development really changes the situation a lot," Agan said. "Even though shareholder resolutions generally don't always work, they do attract a lot of attention and publicity. It's the bad publicity these companies don't want."

Whole Foods Market is a major chain around DC. It caters to all the uppity urban super rich liberal Howard Dean types. I thought they were all vegetarians anyway. Perhaps they are pledging to play music for their lettuce now.

ugh.

I say round em up, force feed em a juicy porterhouse and if they dont see the error in their ways, send them to Pakistan.

Whole Foods is a major chain in Yuppy/Dinkland. If you're young, beautiful, and want Uncle Elmer's Organic Wheat Grass and Edlecrap's No Fat, No Carb, No Taste Soy Based Barf, it's your place.

Normally located in urban areas.

Granted, they do carry some NEAT stuff that's virtually impossible to find elsewhere, such as some varities of rice, but still...

Welcome to THR novalooker!

Well, this newsbit I posted struck me kinda funny. Now I don't care what a persons preference is. If against hunting, meat,...wants to be a vegetarian, hug trees or howl at the moon. I in return want to be left alone.

I do believe in the 2A, amongst other things. I do try and spend my monies with pro gun peoples/businesses...I strive NOT to fund anti's.

I guess it's that know thy enemy and strategy dealie. Awareness of what is going on and perhaps learn from them. Afterall we can't defend against what we don't know. Sometimes the opposition gives we the pro gun another play in the play book.;)

Sometimes its to an advantage to use opponent against himself...work smarter not harder.

Yeah, I'm thinkin' and schemin'

Around St.Louis they're known as "whole paycheck". They have lots of organic and health foods. In a local poll they won:
best deli/lunch counter
best cheese dept. [ I know. I felt kind of silly writing it too. But when you are desperate for a good aged camembert....]

They are actually a wonderful store. The people that work there REALLY know their stuff without making you feel like an idiot in the process. And they have aged PRIME grade meat. (I was kind of surprised to see that too.) But you certainly do pay for the privilege of shopping there.

And it takes an hour or two to get the stench of patchouli out of your clothes. ;-}

It still doesn't sound like a "major" chain, like Kroger's, Publix, Albertson's, just one with a couple locations in many major cities around the yuppy neighborhoods. I'm familiar with Wild Oats filling this niche elsewhere. Where I live now has neither and healthfood means "it ain't fried." Regarding the sobriquet "whole paycheck," it is certainly ironic that being a commie treehugger doesn't come cheap - thank God the trust fund pays for it all.

Just because PETA submits a shareholder resolution doesn't mean it will pass. Certainly if other shareholders are interested in making money any PETA resolution wil fail.
And if these chains cut out the fat and/or meat from their offerings, they will go under and other chains will pick up the slack.
Ultimately, an expensive way to fail.

There were a few Whole Foods Markets in Dallas. I lived across the street from one and shopped there quite a bit. There are a couple down here in Florida too. They specialize in mostly organic products. Prices are way high though.

This is a good thing. Manipulating stock prices is actionable. I'd like to see PETA sued and bankrupted and its officers jailed.

Whole Foods has a number of stores in the MA / RI area too. They have great produce, excellent cheese, and the best damn meat to be found at any gracery store anywhere in the area. And yes the employees are definitely foodies who know their stuff.

I'm not an attorney, but introducing a shareholder resolution hardly qualifies as stock price manipulation.

I'm not a fan of PETA, but if they and their membership choose to start buying stock in a company in order to affect that company's decision making process I don't see anything wrong with it. At least in this case they've chosen a legitimate method to achieve their goals, whether I like them or not.

Whole foods is around the Austin, TX area too. They seem popular, but are often referred to locally as "Whollier than thou" foods. High prices, low quality produce, oddball brands. They also posted "51" signs to try and keep CHL holders out. (Per TX law, businesses that make 51% of their sales in alcohol for on-premesis consumption are "off limits" to licensed concealed carry, and are supposed to post a "51" sign.)
"There's a real concern in the foodservice industry over PETA . . . "
People associate PETA with Earth First, Animal Liberation Front, and other terrorist organizations. They figure it's sort of like the relationship Sinn Fein in Ireland has with the IRA . . . so naturally there's concern.

No "No guns" sign in the Whole Foods in my area. Of course, I keep my pistol out of sight, so they probably don't know there's a law allowing concealed carry, or that I'm wandering through their beer aisle whilst packing.
I go there for all kinds of stuff since I'm allergic to vegetable oil/soybeans/shortening. There actually is some pretty cheap stuff there. Their milk is about .30 cheaper than anywhere else in town. They are pretty fru-fru though. You can almost smell the Dennis Kucinich supporters.

I've also visited the Whole Foods store in Charlottesville and didn't notice any "no guns" signs. They have a good selection of vegetables, produce, and wines.

They are building a new store in Bellevue, WA (I've moved) and I will watch to see if any signs go up.

Wahoo Wah!

No "No Guns" signs in Massachusetts stores.

One of the sweet ironies of living in idiot's paradise is that folks would never assume that normal folks who spend money in Whole Foods would be packing a GUN!

To put up a sign would force them to acknowledge a lot of facts that might make folks face reality and we can't have that here.

It boils down to legal blackmail.

Why is it all the lunatic fringe extremist groups have money to burn while gun rights groups are scrambling for money?

Why is it all the lunatic fringe extremist groups have money to burn while gun rights groups are scrambling for money?

Personally I feel it's the other way around. Gun rights people are usually more than happy to plunk their money down to support their cause.

It is a matter of proportion. Gun rights supporters are usually $35 here, $50 there. The elitist crowd are plopping thousands down. Cause celebre.

I see no cause for concern. If they take down Outback, then another will take its place when they fail. And PETA will lose a fortune!!!

This is America and they have their rights. And they have a right to make poor decisions.

grampster ...:D
yeah , always popping a tic tac, using mouthwash...suspected something myself. ;)

I can't find the links, one is lendsringer's post about the bar he would design...I'd like to those made into a franchise. The other is the post in regard to pro RKBA folks being up front about, sure we have those whom have business concerns, but they make it known, instead o fbeing some antis and hiding .
