Petersburg man shoots two during attempted robbery
From NBC12 News www.nbc12.com
A Petersburg man took the law into his own hands when two men broke into his house. Detectives say the men forced their way through the front door of a home in the Hill Street Townhouses yesterday afternoon and the resident inside shot both men. Their injuries are not considered life threatening and both are expected to face charges.

The TV news is reporting that the two managed to leave the house under their own power after both were shot by the homeowner. They are reported to have gone directly to the local hospital, where one was "treated and released" while the other was "admitted for treatment." The one admitted to the hospital "is expected to be arrested and charged" after he gets out of the hospital. The other "is expected to be arrested shortly."

The actual on-air report did NOT use the phrase "took the law into his own hands." The talking head said "the homeowner defended himself."

The Petersburg, Virginia Chief of Police was interview and said: 1) "here are always a number of variables in a situation like this" and 2) I can't tell anyone exactly what they should or should not do". :)

The item finished up by the talking head saying that "more and more home invasions are ending up like this one did." :D

+1 to the homeowner, and +1 to the Chief. I'm thinking I ought to give a +1 to the TV news programming, but want to wait to see how they handle any follow-up stories. Till then, I'll be "standing by" to hear of the arrest of both of the perps.

stay safe.

He DID NOT 'take the law into his own hands' nor is he a vigilante. This is SELF DEFENSE. WHY oh WHY can't the liberals get this difference figured out? Ok, ok, I know they HAVE but WANT to demonize SD and do not understand the logic of the situation.

My congratulations to the homeowner!

Home invasions have become chronic in the Richmond/Petersburg area over the past couple of years. Hardly a week goes by without a new one being reported. Many of them are violent and numerous people have been killed or injured. Chalk one up for the good guys this time.

Congratulations to the homeowner who was in a position to defend himself. Thank goodness for his constitutional right to bear arms.

:)

Treated and released??? For gunshots?? I thought those had to be reported. If not... then they should have a uniform there to interview folks...

Sounds like a good shoot to me. I wonder if theh homeowner was using a .22 or other small caliber weapon.

The first guy was "treated and released" - I thought hospitals had to call the police for any gun shot wounds they treated?

It sounds like this was reported in a fair and unbiased manner, too - the way it should be. Nothing pisses me off more than people who were not being robbed telling the victims what THEY should have done. Glad this wasn't the case.

Kudos to another one willing to defend himself.

This makes me think twice about the firearm I'm using for home defense (Remington 31 12ga). I should start looking for a smaller caliber weapon.

Just this week my wife noticed that two mornings in a row our side gate was open. The first day to dog got out, there is no reason for anyone to enter my back yard. Anyway, after it happened a second time I got a bit worried (the first time may have been wind, racoons, etc.. but twice). I did a couple of things including putting a lock on the gate and upgrading the motion light but I also called the police. The sgt. I talked to was friendly and asked the right questions, gave some advice, said he woudl put it on the printout given to the local patrols and then said a couple of things that I think you'll find interesting.

He said that it would be up to me to be vigilant about this, to talk to neighbors, keep a lookout, etc.. He said that the cops can't be everywhere at the same time so I was the one who had to take lead. Then without even skipping a beat he told me that he didnt want me to take the law into my own hands, that if I felt threatend or came across the bg that I shoudl call them to protect me :scrutiny: I thanked him politely for his time.

So, they can't be everywhere - but if I am in danger, just give them a call. I am not a cop basher, I know they have a tough job to do, I just wonder if they are instructed to tell folks 'not to take the law... blah blah blah

Stay safe y'all.
