It looked more like a bulk ammo and magazine trade bazaar than a sporting goods store and the prices were pre-Sandy Hook/post-reelection. I expect them to go significantly lower.

I resisted buying 300 or 650 rd UMC .40 bulk packs at $0.33/rd because I think it will fall further. I picked up a bunch of domestic steel case .223 for about $0.27/rd.

Everything but rimfire.

Mike

PS. In the last week I have personally bought 3 boxes of 420 round SS109, 3 100 rd boxes of 9mm, and 3 50 rd boxes of .380 all at Walmart's standard (pre-Sandy Hook) prices using the Walmart Android app to see which stores were getting stock in and calling to ask shelf stocking times (vary greatly from store to store). The light at the end of the tunnel is here.

Ammo has returned in Cincinnati, to some degree.

Tula .223 sitting on the shelf at $6.29/20.

CCI Mini-Mags and Standard Velocity available for $7.99/100 and $2.99, respectively.

I stopped by Cabelas in Phoenix last week and found a lot more rifle cartridges in stock as well as bullets. Very, very little in handgun calibers, though the reloading section wasn't as barren as it has been lately. At least they have a good assortment of dies and bullets, but of course only obscure powders that hardly anyone uses. It was a step in the right direction!

I stopped by my local Academy today and saw more hunting ammo stocked than I have seen in quite some time.
No 308 or 30-30 though.
And very limited pistol ammo.
Of course no 22LR either.

I know of a guy with 10,000 rds for sale. He wants $80 for a 550 rnd bulk pack. No way!

Does Cabelas still have The Great Wall of 7.62 Nagant? :D

Good to hear that supply is making its way down to us "little people".

The bass pro by me has had a much wider variety of powder as of late. Managed to get a pound of varget for 27, 4350 is everywhere again just no handgun powder.

Two days ago, my local WM had just about everything on the shelf except 380acp, including 223, 9mm, 40, 45, 357, and most hunting cartridges.

This morning, they still had some of everything except 223 (and 380).

I went to Wal-mart a few days ago and they had a few boxes of .223, some small 40 round .22lrs, .380, things I haven't seen much of in a while.

I think the ammo drought is finally lifting.

I just left the range at Bass Pro (Grapevine, TX).
There was a pound of Unique, a pound of W231, a pound or two of HP38, a pound of H110, and a pound of Varget.

Best selection in quite some time.

When you start seeing American Brand ammo like Winchester,Remington and Federal in stock on a regular basis then you can say things are over. Till then the shortage continues.

BTW who runs steel ammo in their expensive guns.

I run steel if that is what I happen to have with me. Extractors are cheap and haven't needed one in changed in about 6k rounds through one rifle.

Also, you can walk into my local Cabelas in the AM and get any standard caliber you would like.

I run steel in very limited quantities when that is all I can find as a tide-me-over and it is no issue for the gun.

I have managed to find a lot of SS109 (the other kind of steel) at pretty good prices during the shortage but I don't run these with my gongs and metal targets.

My AR10 is expensive, my AR15 is not. As much as I like the modern AR ergonomics, I have always considered .223 as somewhat of a toy cartridge (flame away--I can take it) and recent positive experiences with the AR platform have not changed that although modern bullet technology has moderated my views somewhat on terminal ballistics of the round with respect to medium game, my impressions of the exterior ballistics of the round have not changed.

The ammo shelf in the sporting goods section at Meijers is still empty. Been that way since December.

Cabela's in KC still out of 22LR, almost all bullets, very little powder, no primers. There was some Fiocchi .223 50gr Extrema which is one of the best domestically produced varmint rounds and selling for $27 for a box of 50. This is the first time I have seen this ammo in months. Hope it's a good omen. It was being bought, but still saw 50-60 boxes on the shelf.

On the other hand, our local Walmart hasn't had an ammo shipment for five days according to the store manager (who's a friend). Our Sportsman's has been just as spotty.

Lucky and cheap...

I didn't buy up (i.e., hoard) during the panic. Judging from a quick anecdotal survey of online purveyors, with the exception of 9mm, it looks like ammo is becoming more available and the prices are coming down. There seems to be even a fair amount of 5.56 for sale.

There's going to be a lot of stale ammo out there...:neener:
