does anyone make a photo record of thier guns . along with pics of the SNs . to be able to give to the police or insurance companies in case they are stolen?? i have been thinking of doing this and putting it in my safty deposit box.. just wondering if there are any cons to this idea..??

thanks , shawn

Yes. I have a copy of my gun photos and information on a CD disk. One copy is in my safe and one copy is in my safe deposit box.

There are multipule copies in various media stored in various locations. There are at least three copies that can be used to turn into the insurance company. But not all under one roof.

Dont forget to double check the value of your insurance coverage to adequately replace your firearms.

i keep a written record.
maybe a photo record would be a good idea as well.

I keep written and photo records on multiple computers in multiple places. Also in other formats like CDRom, usb flash drive, E-mail in box....there is even software, free shareware type avail. The one I found as a result of a thread here on THR is called "gunsafe". I also hooked up a cheap webcam pointed at my safe with motion activation, it senses motion, records video and sends it to my e-mail address.

cool idea on the USB flash drive.. i have several of those laying around.. would be perfect to thow in the safty deposit box.. nice and small.. love the idea of the motion activated cam on the gunsafe.

Absolutely: both a written and photo record, stored on a flash drive and also backed up ... just in case. A photo record is much better than to be left guessing, even with some written documentation.

I just bought a S&W 642. I like how S&W gives you in a sealed envelope, a round fired from the gun before it was shipped out to be sold.

I keep the round seperate from my firearm in a firesafe should anything happen to my gun. The envelope has the Serial number, the make and model on it and basically is the proof of ownership and fingerprint to your gun.

I really liked that S&W does that. Nice little perk when buying the firearm.

Springfield does this too, as do some others. It's a proof round, basically just a function and basic accuracy check. Never thought of it as a way of tracking or proving ownership of the gun though. Guess they could use the firing pin strike, and the extractor and ejector marks like they do rifling. Heck, they used to be able to identify typewriters by the unique casting and machine marks on the individual type.

Yeah the person who sold me the gun at the sporting goods store I got it from said that it's a good way to show proof of ownership because...well...who else would have that one of a kind sealed envelope with the round in it?

I say that, apart from photographs and stuff, is plenty enough for a "file" about the guns you own.

I would say yes because I take pics of all my guns. Also I record the serial numbers and the round count in a word file.

I have pics of my guns, stored via flashdrive and on the internet like photobucket.

I also have a written record of serial numbers and brief description that is in the safety deposit box, which only my mom or dad can have access to.

I have pictures of all my guns, and I have a file of serial numbers and miscellaneous info. I made small labels about 2"x3" that have make, model, caliber, serial number and mfg date for each gun. My plan was to photograph each gun next to its label for my official record. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have 2 identical small photo albums from Wal-Mart, one in the house and a second in a safe deposit box, with photos of all my guns plus a printed list with serial numbers and all other info.

I carry a rider on my home insurance policy for my guns. My insurance company gets a photo CD in the mail about once per year (sometimes more often). This way, I know I'll be covered at replacement value if anything happens. Especially the older stuff. I take several pictures of all of my guns to verify condition as well as the S/N's.

I keep a set of pictures of all my guns with the serial number written on the back of each picture. One set is in my safe deposit box and another set is in the company safe at work. I have all sales receits with serial numbers in my safe deposit box and my insurance agent has copies of pictures and receits.

Yes,

I actually keep a database with make, model, serial number, photos, shots fired by brand, failures, parts replaced etc.

Be sure to back it up off site if you can. A CD or flash drive in a safety deposit box is an inexpensive solution. I use an off site backup solution to backup my computer - Mozy, another good company is Carbonite.

Good idea, but no, I haven't done this.

I have detailed descriptions and all pertinent information compiled in a spreadsheet and saved on several drives on and off site. Probably good enough, but the photo record would be another good measure.
