Oleg's friend, THR moderator Sven, visited the other week. We went to my parent's home where they have plenty of acreage to shoot on. It was cold that week.

Today we went to the Owl Hollow gun club, located south of Nashville. With us were cslinger and sheslinger.

Gratuitous gun pic of an original Walther P38 (top), and a more recent P1. The P38 belonged to the man in the next stall - his father brought the trophy back from WWII.

The man with the P38 brought along his family. His son was highly interested in the guns we brought, so we were happy to let him shoot them. We gave him Oleg's business card so he could visit THR. Give him a warm welcome if he pops in!

Just a friendly word of advice, Sven should keep his eyes closer to the sights!

No, really, the weather was perfect, we had great fun, Tom (the guy who Cslinger is talking to) was supposed to recently turn in a paper on WWII weapons. So we told him to come on over to THR any time he wants a dissertation (sp?) on any gun-related stuff done in 2 hours.

Next time we go (probably next weekend if the weather allows), anyone close to Owl Hollow in Spring Hill, TN (about 10 miles south of Franklin) is welcome to join us. Would be pretty cool to have another weekend like this one with THR folks.

We mentioned to Oleg and Runt that we wanted to have a cookout at our house some time soon, so if anyone is interested, let myself or Cslinger know so that we can iron out the details.

Still somewhat hesitant to vouch for the legality of that Chinese M14 clone...

Especially with an open-slotted flash hider and bayonet lug. :(

Of all the things I miss about the States, this has got to be in the top 2. Thanks for sharing and bringing things a little closer to home.
 
Yup, Blain, I'm a communist.

You got me, dead to rights. Been deployed now, as a communist, in the Air Force, since January 28th, to protect the communist way of live in the U.S. Been doing that job for just over 17 years as of last week. But, hey, thanks for giving me the opportunity to come clean about it, ok? I feel like the weight of the world has been removed from my shoulders. :scrutiny:


BTW, I also hold an FFL. Along with all the ATF rulebooks that go along with it. So there's a teensy chance I know a thing or two about pre-ban and post-ban guns. The funny thing is, Norinco and Polytech M14's weren't imported into this country with slotted flash hiders and functional bayonet lugs, as laid out in the 1989 ATF "sporting purposes" import rules. (NOT the '94 Crime Bill rules, FYI) But it didn't stop people here from retrofitting them with original USGI flash hiders, every now and then they crop up. When asked to retrofit a Norinco or Polytech M14 variant with a USGI flash hider/bayo lug, M14 smiths like Fulton Armory and Smith Enterprises won't touch it with a 10-foot pole - nor should they.

The point I'm trying to make is that I wouldn't broadcast images of a gun that didn't have it's legal ducks in a row- even (or especially) if they are the owners of the website. Oleg and Betty's photos make their way around the internet rather quickly, including several anti-gun sites. Don't give the anti's any more ammo. I'm not knocking Oleg's or Betty's guns and day of fun at the range. I just cringe every time I see that Chinese M14 variant with the USGI muzzle posted here and on TFL.
 
Blain, calm down! The man is trying to help -- no reason to jump him.

Before I bought that rifle, I checked up on the import date. According to the info I found, mine (very low serial #) came in in 1988. Is my info incorrect? If so, please email or PM me.

The documentation I have shows enactment of the "sporting purposed ban" in June of 1989. (Which coincides with the start of all those bayo-lugless AK's showing up here) If you've got documentation that shows import of your particular M14S sometime before enactment of that import restriction, and the gun was already in that lugged/slotted flash hider configuration, you should be good to go. It's just a rarity to see one configured that way and still remain legal. Clint McKee and Ron Smith would definitely do a double-take if you were ever to send it their way for M14 work.
 
The gun is labeled M14, not M14 Sporter. SN is about 2000 below the cut-off for '89. I appreciate the heads-up though.
 
Sounds like you had a great time. I'd love to meet Oleg and some of you guys sometime.

We shot yesterday, and it was a beautiful day. There is a VEPR in my future.
