The gun bug has stung again. I'm trying to decide between a Glock or XD. I already have the XD sub-compact in .40 so if I go with the XD, should I get the service or the tactical? I think that is what they call them.

Please vote and tell me why you voted that way.

Sorry - but NEITHER of those choices IMO is acceptable in a .40 S&W chambering.

I've owned Glocks - not ergonomic, the chamber isn't full supported, polygonal rifling (not really conducive to shooting lead - debatable), crappy trigger, and too light for the snappy recoil of a .40 S&W. On the positive side they're easy to maintain, accurate enough for a carry gun and very, very, very reliable (a G22 was my carry gun for almost 2 years until I discovered CZ and Sig).

XD - just another plastic gun and IMO too light for a .40 S&W. Though I've never fired one I have handled one and they're just too light for my taste.

For a .40 I'd recommend either a CZ-75 or a SIG P226. Both are full size all metal guns. Both tame the snappy recoil of the .40. Both are way more accurate than the GLOCK and the SIG at least is more reliable. The CZ-75 is widely used in Europe as both a military and police arm and the SIG is used by the US Military and probably by, police organizations as well.

Sig or CZ - a no brainer for me.

If you want a a plastic gun, you should take a look at the Smith and Wesson M&P. IMHO, it is better than the Glock and the XD.
Just my $.02

glock 35, light light recoil, pretty accurate, easily maintained, parts avaliable everywhere, fits my hand great, no snap, more of a push, chamber support isnt an issue if you shoot factory ammo or +p+ or +p, both guns are great but if something fails would you rather order the part or send it in for a week?
you already have a SA, which is an excellent gun (in my views) its the glocks uptight cousin, both have good accuracy, go to a range and rent a G35 and a tactical, thats what i did when i was having the same issue.

XD-40 hands down

As an XD-40 owner that has fired close to 3000 rounds out of mine, I can say that they are awesome. Its very comfortable to shoot, the XD does have enough weight to soften the 40 recoil, which as never been a big deal for me anyway. I've had zero failures and the grip frame size/angle are perfect for me. I would definitely buy the XD over the Glock. I agree with the ads concerning the XD, they ergonomics are excellent.

I didn't vote as you didn't have an "other" choice. The XD is far and away a better choice than the Glock for numerous reasons including safety but I'd go with a CZ or Witnesss full size in 40.

Sorry....neither. Both are fine in 9mm. Would prefer the PX4, P226 or M&P in .40.......in that order.

I have the GLOCK, XD, SIG and CZ in .40 All excellent pistols. The intended use of your pistols may make the decision for you.

The SIG and CZ are fine carry guns. The Glock carries well but the XD (large one) is heavy and bulky.

As shooters they are do well and are reliable. The SIG and CZ came out of the box shooting into one hole. The CZ has a creeepy trigger but that gets better with use. The Glock and XD are not target pistols but can hold their own at the range.

Combat pistols, anyone of them is fine.

The .40 is an excellent round but takes some getting use to since the recoil is sharp to some shooters. This is true in my GLOCK and SIG, the XD is heavy and soaks it up and the CZ is designed so well it shoots as a 9mm with hot loads.

Indeed, and in fact, I have the same series of pistols in 9mm and enjoy them MORE than the .40's..

Some where in this mess I hope I have hit the nerve which made your decision. Good Luck.

I got the XD. Now I have interchangable parts and it was cheper.

Here in Texas, there is no requirement for anyone to keep shell casing from the test-fire round so it usually comes with the gun in a sealed envelope and signed and dated. The stamped name is definately foriegn, so I'm assuming it is from the factory and not the importer. The date stamp is 7-3-07. 4 days with a holiday in-between seems really, really quick for something to make it from the factory to me. Is this right?

I own both a Glock and XD (Tactical) in 40. I think both are good guns and prefer the Glock only because of my profession. If you are not sure, handle both and go with the one that feels the best. However, one drawback to the XD is capacity. For some reason SA designed it with a 12 round mag. The same size on Glock gets 15 rounds. Even the Glock 23 has a 13 round mag. This is even more aggravating when you consider the XD 45 holds 13 rounds...

Day Month Year is more likely.

You mentioned that the "gun bug" has struck again probably meaning you don't actually "need" this gun, you just want it. And if you're just getting something you want to shoot, might as well get one you can have some fun with.

I own a Glock 22 .40 cal. It comes out of the box shooting dependably where you want it. But because I bought it when the "gun bug bit" I decided to do some cool stuff to it.

I added a Hi-Viz front sight that glows like something radioactive in outside light. To accompany that and to add accuracy ability, I replaced the rear sight with a MMC adjustable, which also changes the profile of the gun and makes it look better. Then I put in a Bar Sto stainless barrel to complete the package. It's a hoot to fire with, utterly dependable and looks pretty good now.

Go with a Glock, out of the box ready, or if you want aftermarket stuff, you can find it everywhere.

They are both reliable and great. I have an XD 40 and it is great - and I like the extra features that it comes with that glock does not have. It also feels better in the average hand, and personaly I think it looks better for what ever that's worth to ya.
I'm ganna get the XD sub-compact in .40 in a day or so....

For me - It's XD.

I prefer Glocks over the XD's. In .40 S&W, I own a G23 and G27. I only shoot factory ammo through them. You could get a Sig 226 or 229 CPO for the same price as a new Glock. I don't own one in .40 S&W but do own Sigs in 9mm and .45 ACP.

Shoot both and decide which you like better.

I like, today, the XD over the Glock. I like the M&P over both.

"SIG is used by the U.S. military." ??? Really?

Yes sir . The P226 is used by certain special units including SEALS . The P228 is designated the M11 . They are more widely distributed . I'm sure a member more informed than myself can elaborate further .

I don't have any experience with the XD, but my Glock 22 has been perfect since I got it in 2000. I can highly recommend it. Superb handgun.

For tactical (not CCW) get the Glock. For CCW, I'd go with the XD simply because of the grip safety. I like the Glocks better for many reasons but the XD wins because of the grip safety, which to me is important for carry. My Home Defense gun is a Glock 35 and I love it. It honestly is super accurate and NEVER malfunctions.

I'm not a XD fan, so I would go w/ the Glock...specifically the G35. But if it were me, I'd go w/ the Beretta 96 & use the mags in the XD you already have ;)

I carry a S&W M&P now. If nothing else, their customer service has won me over. I had problems with the weapon out of the box. S&W sent me a UPS shipping label, and six days later I had the pistol back in hand, fixed, with free novak night sights.

The pistol has worked like a champ ever since and I am confident that if I ever have any problems with it, a quick, free fix is only a phone call away.

I voted Glock, but only because I've never had the good fortune to fire an XD. My Glock, a Glock 27, has had its problems. Recently I have had it lock back on a round three times and I have had the slide lock up on me to the point where I could not field strip it. I have pinpointed the problem to the trigger safety, which has locked up due to (who knows? my guess...) carbon buildup. In any event, I have a friend checking it out.

Glocks are (allegedly) stupendously reliable, but mine has left me a bit unsure. This after five years of owning it.

My personal favorite at this point is the SIG P239 in 357 SIG. It has had nary a failure to feed, and for me it's like shooting darts. But that's not the question you asked.

I think that my Glock is a phenomenal gun, but as you might expect I cannot make up your mind for you. That is your call, entirely. By the poll the XD wins. I'd like to try an XD in the near future, but who knows? In any event, I think my particular problem, minor though it is, is an aberration, I heartily recommend a Glock.
