I picked Glock but in reality I would get a Sig or HK in the .40 caliber over both you listed

No Yugos in my futire. The last ones (with 4 wheels) didn't fare so a few years after the owners bought them.

My Glock, a Glock 27, has had its problems. Recently I have had it lock back on a round three times

I'm not following you. What happened?

and I have had the slide lock up on me to the point where I could not field strip it. I have pinpointed the problem to the trigger safety, which has locked up due to (who knows? my guess...) carbon buildup.

Not following you again. How the heck could the trigger safety cause the slide "lock up"?

Is this friend also an Air Force guy? Just kidding. That was low, I know.

im gonna be a jerk and say Beretta 96. i have one and love it. buy one before they're all replaced with plastic pistols.

52% to 47%... Too close to call. I'd pick a Glock, my best friend would pick an XD. Go with whatever feels best to you...

Between those two, the XD. It has a supported chamber and I like having 10 fingers. I'll also give a little push towards the M&P. I have a M&P 9c. Fantastic gun. Much more accurate than the Glocks I have shot and fits your hand much better.

I don't care what anyone says, you WILL be fine with either choice. It's down to which one fits your hand the best really. You might also consider the M&P40 as well as it's in the same price range.

Those who haven't owned either are doing the shooting community a disservice by slandering either model based on what they read "on the web."

Since the poll was a 50-50 split, I went with the Springfield. It was about $50 cheaper and felt better in my hand. I took it to the range last weekend and put 200 rounds of Winchester White Box, Winchester Personal Protection, and Blazer Brass downrange. Today, I put 200 rounds of Blazer Brass through it. It has been 100% reliable and I am very happy with it.

To anyone thinking about the Mellinium Pro, don't. I went that way first and was not happy.

I think it's pretty much a wash between the Glock and the XD but from your choices I lean towards the XD.

I personally don't aim well with Glock's grip angle so I tend to stay away from them. I am also, let's just call it "cautious", about a chamber that isn't fully supported.

Now I've been very happy with my XD, done quite a bit of shooting with it, and been very happy with the results. I'd have called it my favorite .40 S&W pistol until just recently when I got a CPO SIG 229.

I have never shot anything that tames the .40 S&W like the SIG does and I simply have nothing more to say about it.

(EDIT: DOH, missed the update. I think you'll enjoy your new XD)

Between the two choices I'd take the XD 40, more natural angle, more comfortable grip and a fully supported chamber.

Glock is an OK firearm but I think you can get better for the price, it does have after market parts in it's favor.

I'd rather have a CPO Sig P229 for the same price. The P229 is a very nice 40 S&W, lighter feeling recoil, great number of parts, etc.

I was going to reply, but I see you already bought the Springfield. I'm sure it's a good gun and I hope it gives you exemplary service.

My choice would have been Glock. I'm one of those oddballs for who the XDs were not a good fit.

I have XD Compact .40 & I just bought the XD Subcompact .40.
They are great! And as far as recoil... my teen daugters have no trouble, so don't let recoil myth be an issue cause unless you're an 80lb girl you'll be fine.

You need to choose for your self.

I picked XD over Glock cause it has more features and feels better. A lot of Glock people hate XD I've noticed??? Insecure????

Anyhow - I you can't decide on your own then you probably should wait till you're ready.

My .02
SIG P229.

But I hate when people give answers to questions not asked, so I voted GLOCK just to keep the poll dead even at 50% each.
But personally I'd not buy either in .40

I voted XD. Why?

1. Prior experience. I've had good experience with S-A before, so why not buy another S-A gun (even if it is a rebadged 'croatian sensation'). Not that I've had bad experience with Glock, I just preferred going back to something I know.

2. Price. The XD tends to run anywhere from $50-$100 cheaper than comparable Glocks in my area. YMMV

3. Fit. The XD fit me better. Again, YMMV. I don't like the finger grooves of the 3rd Gen GLocks. My fingers never seem to fit.

4. Barrel. Full case support on the XD. While not as big a deal on the 40 Short and Weak, it makes a difference on others like 10mm. But in that case, the XD has no 10mm offereing so this is actually a moot point.

5. Grip Safety. The XD has one and the Glock does not. Again, this may be a moot point as another safety is just another point to fail and an AD/ND is operator error.

So basically, it all comes down to what you like. If you like the Glock more, buy the Glock. If you like the XD more, by the XD.

As a side note, there is a bigger aftermarket for the Glock. If you plan on doing a lot of 'customization' the Glock may be a better alternative. There are many companies modifying the grip angle as well on the Glock.

Wow...

A dead heat. 52 to 52.

Although I personally do not like either of the guns that you mentioned, I voted for the Glock because the ones that I have shot in 40 felt better and were more accurate for me, but like I said, that was for me. I have also seen the Glocks be slightly more reliable than the XD’s in 40 (the other way around in 45, the same in 9mm).

I am not really biased in this because I don’t like either gun personally, although I think that they are both well made, quality firearms, they just don’t work as well as other choices for me.

I imagine the Glocks are the same way but another thing to keep in mind is that the XD40 can be converted to a 9MM or a 357SIG with just a barrel and magazine change. Like three guns in one.

As you said, Glocks are the same way.

Glock 23. 100% hands down. The XD doesnt even compare and shame on anyone who dares to compare that POS to a Glock. The XD is the 1911'ers answer to a tacticool pistol that does not say Glock but without the quality of the Austrian company.

[Rant On/]

:scrutiny: Yeah... checked out the "NEW" XD and I am not jumping on that bandwagon anytime soon. Its quality of action and build does not compare to that of Glock or HK. But since some dopebag writers blow their ink on the thing everyone wants to blow their wallets too. :banghead:

But if its trendy and "high fashion" you want then I guess the XD knew how to market their product. Guns are no different than clothing I guess :banghead:

Go with quality, durability, and dependability. Save the hype for the mall ninjas and the 1911s for those who are affraid of progress/have insane amounts of disposable income or both.

[Rant Off/]

Who shoot's both? How is the felt recoil in same sized frames/caliber? The XD "looks" taller like it is not in line with your arm and would add leverage.

hmm someone a bit biased here? both are great guns, hands down. I've owned several XDs and several Glocks. Never a single failure/problem of any kind from either brand. IMO the XD is the only sub 500 dollar polymer gun that deserves the same, if not MORE credit, than the Glock. Specifically in .40SW, my XD handled the recoil better and was MUCH softer shooting and less painful to shoot than my Glock. To say the XD doesn't have the build quality of Glock or even HK is stupid. These guns are built like absolute tanks, inside and out. Call me crazy, but besides the insane Tennifer finish on the Glocks, I think the XD is a better built gun overall. Trigger, naturally actuated safety features, grip angle (and overall ergos), dovetailed sights, METAL guide rod (vs. Glocks plastic), ambi mag release, etc, etc make the XD a better gun IMO.

I can't think of a single feature that the Glock can boast over the XD besides a lower bore axis (which still doesn't make the Glock handle recoil any better IMO) and the Tennifer finish. The XDs finish is NOTHING short of top-notch, however. Both will experience holster wear after awhile, and both won't rust under normal circumstances, so who cares? Accuracy is a stupid argument, because both are as good as it gets out of a polymer service gun.

Call me crazy, but after owning a few of both the XD and Glocks in various calibers, I'd trust my life to the XD before the Glock.

Now with all that being said, if I could choose ANY .40 caliber for you, it would hands down be a Sig P229..even a CPO trade-in at around the same price as a new Glock or XD. These are the ultimate .40 caliber machines IMO. Good luck!
