I really had my mind set on a 10/22 but they did not have any in stock. After playing with this one I had to have it. If it shoots half as well as it feels in my hand I will be happy. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.
I have the same one (and 3 other savage rim fires) I put a 32X scope on. With a front and rear bag off a bench I shoot dime size 5 round groups at 50 yards all day.
Finally got it out to the range last night. So far I really like it. Got more accurate as I got used it. Took a few adjustments but started to shoot very nice groups. Here is a pic of the 3rd set of 5 I shot.. This was indoors at 25yds. using standard Remington cheap ammo.
I have a MKII FV, and I love it. I've started toying with different ammo to see how good of groups I can get. Here are a couple pics for you.
Savage MKII FV w/ Bushnell rimfire scope (getting replaced with a used Bushnell Sportview 4.5-12x 40mm, as the rimfire scope saw its last days... optics went bad, probably from when I dropped the rifle after I first got it... just waiting on new rings):
5-round groups at 50ft with CCI Stinger 32gr HV ammo:
No sandbag, just using my hand and the table as best I can. I bet a sandbag would improve those groups. And yes, that upper-left group is 5 shots.
I doubt that you'll regret that purchase. I have both a Ruger 10/22 and a Savage Mark II. The Ruger is a lot of fun, but when I absolutly have to hit something at any real distance the Savage comes out. I have it fitted with a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42. Using Wolf Match Target ammo, I have shot several ten shot groups under one inch at 100 yards. When I just want to plink, Federal Auto Match is a very accurate bulk ammo. I have no end of fun with my little Savage!
I played with one of those a couple of weeks ago, and it was really tempting. Ended up ordering an FV and a riser for the stock - hopefully, being a little bit cheap won't bite me later. We'll see when the rifle gets here.
That's a beautiful example of one too! You really can't beat Savage for accuracy at it's price point.
The problem at shorter ranges is not really knowing where the shots hit after the ragged hole is created. I personally like "drawing" things like smiley faces, or numbering the rings like a clock face .
I'm anxious to test different ammo out at longer distances. After all, 50ft is only around 17yds. Once it warms up, I'll bust out the sand bag and hit the outdoor rifle range for some fun.
JersyChris,
Man that's a looker AND a shooter, once you get it shot in ,try some ELY, CCI Green Tag then you'll see what it can really do.
MrSpiffy,
I have the same gun as yours, but with a Bushnell Trophy 3X9.
Just a heads up about CCI Stingers, the case is longer than a 22 LR by about 1/10" and the bullet is shorter and being a heeled bullet it lets the Stinger feed in a normal 22LR chamber. Some target barrels like the one on your Savage are reamed with a match chamber, tighter spec's in the Savage chamber and the longer Stinger case could cause damage to the chamber.
I've found most minimum spec. target type 22 chambers shoot more accurate with standard loads or sub sonic loadings.
That's really good to know. Thanks, dagger dog! I haven't noticed any issues, so far. And it's interesting that the Stingers actually were more accurate. So, I'm thinking that mine may not have an issue with them. But I still plan to test out more ammo, when it arrives. I have some Wolf Match Target, SK Match, and Aguila Super Maximum on the way, arriving on Tuesday. Can't wait to try them out!
I have new scope rings on the way, too. I'm excited to mount that "new" Bushnell Sportview 4.5-12x on the MKII to see what it can really do!
