I was wondering if anyone here has attempted something like that. The fruit can be a little high on the tree sometimes, and sometimes you don't feel like bring out a ladder. Might as well have some fun with a little target practice, and if you love fruit like me, you could find it very rewarding.

The first thing i would be concerned with is shooting in the air. Where will the bullet come down?

Unless you're good enough to consistently hit the stem it sounds more like pieces of fruit hitting the ground.

Last time I did it was 5-6 years ago at a buddy's house. He suggested the idea and he lives on a small apple orchard in the middle of nowhere. I used the Ruger 10/22 he had.

Sounds like a good way to accidently kill someone unless you own miles of land around your trees.

A little girl was shot dead in my county some years ago for no apparent reason. Turns out a downs kid took his dads rifle outside, quite a ways away, and shot it into the air.

What goes up, comes down.

My Uncle carried a .22 caliber bullet in his arm from his teens until the day he died. The bullet entered at his elbow and came to rest about halfway to his wrist. Turned out a couple of kids almost 3/4 mile away was shooting birds out of a tree.

Don't do it!! Make sure of your backstop!

Definitely not one of my most brilliant ideas was to shoot the dead limbs out of the trees with my shotgun. Not as bad as a rifle but them little pellets gotta come down too.

If there is a hill near by that is taller than the trees, you could shoot down towards the tree. I think that would be pretty safe and fun.

This may sound very dangerous and I will admit it was pretty stupid of us, we got up on his roof to shoot at them. I guess that's as close to a hill as we are gonna get. My buddy got the idea from the Clint Eastwood movie "For a Few Dollars More".

Personally I've never attempted this but when I was a boy I watched my uncle gather mistletoe for Christmas with a 22LR single shot from several oak trees on his farm. He never missed and I was absolutely dumbfounded.

Things were very different then. This is not something that I would attempt today.

I suppose if someone goes out of their way to make certain that any bullets which over-penetrate and which miss and which ricochet are not going to do any physical or bodily damage or harm, sure, I could see shooting a top off a 100' high tree to get the Christmas tree to drop nearly into the bed of my pickup truck.

Only problem is, where in the WORLD would THAT BE today?????!??@??@??@?@Q wpieti[rrdrgt

Ya know they say you shouldn't say anything if you don't have anything nice to say, but this thread is amazing...

I'm going to agree with most others and say it sounds like a good way to get someone else hurt...I wouldn't try it.

Not safe for people.
Not good for the tree.

Might such questions help explain the gun laws in the OP's home state?

Getting ideas on how to shoot from movies is not a really great idea.

Think how ignorant about guns the average person is, then realize that half of them are more ignorant than that.

lolololol~

Funny thing is, I know just where Fort Dix, NJ is, I used to have to drive deliveries to that town (city now). I used to stop at the army base and watch the jets taking off and landing while eating my lunch. Fortunately no bullets hit my vehicle!

I agree with you that this isn't a good idea and definitely shouldn't be done, but for those of us in these states with these extra laws that do use our firearms with careful considerations about how they are being used...well it sucks.
From NY btw.

That signature is in reference to what someone told me years ago. I will admit that I was really stupid. I have never recklessly handled firearms in my life and as I posted earlier, I was on the roof shooting downwards. I probably should have been more serious in the post as I was hoping people would see my sarcasm.
