Looking to buy a first rifle.
It would be used primarily to exterminate coyotes and pigs that are p***ing off Grand Ma. Our family has a 350 acre plot of land in east TX. and the yotes are starting to get brave and comming up to the house, and the pigs are tearing up down by the creek. At this point am not looking at hunting anything else. Maybe later, but that is undecided.
The only rifle experience I have is with .22 and I don't think that will cut for the pigs and yotes. As for the rest of the family, well they are fence sitters and know very little about guns. So, I turn to you fine folks. Right now we have 4 long guns. None of them had seen the outside of the closet until I married into the family. I was in heaven when I found them. pulled them out, cleaned them, and tore up alot of cans a fruit, and a couple of dillos that were diggin in the yard.
2 rifles are .22's. One is a savage and the other is unknown. One is an autoloader and the other a single shot. 1 20ga shotgun and one combo .223 and 20ga over/under. Not sure of makes of those either.
So what woudl you reccomend? I will probably be buying new. Budget is about $400. $500 if I whine enough.
How would .223 do against yotes and pig? I have several reccomend a winchester lever action in 30-30. I like the idea but ammo seems fairly scarce and expensive (not reloading...YET).
Oh yeah, this would also be used for tearing up a lot of cans and fruit.
At some point in the future I will be looking at old military rifles but not yet. As I've, stated I would prefer something new.
What are your thought?
