Hi all there have been lots of pictures of 642's posted here, DHART does some great photography of revolvers which are all in perfect condition.
So for a change of pace, I thought I would post some pictures of my 642 with the wear to the finish from 2 years of pocket carry on a daily basis.
The holster is a kramer pocket holster made of horse hide.

I'm not sure where you ae seeing dye from the holster, but the top stap has the finish completely worn off in some spots, the shiney metal is the aluminum which has become polished from wear. The cylinder has some wear marks as well from the holster.

Master Blaster:

Thanks for posting these pics. Do you do anything differently(cleaning, maintenance, etc.) on these worn spots?

For 2 years of pocket carry, it seems to be holding up well. I've had my 642 since 11 May 2005, and I think pocket carry will be the primary carry method. Did Smith&Wesson use the same finish on my revolver that is on yours?

ahhhhh, thats just charactor marks. shows a gun at work is a beautiful thing.

clean it, oil it, wipe it down, and carry it well. should last you at least 2 more years ;) ;)

to me most of the black looking marks appear to be dye from the holster--perhaps the pics are just bad and they're not black and its finish wear causing a shadow effect...

I dare not show you pics of the 342 that someone I know well carries 16x7x52. It's just a a tool, and that's what happens when you carry a tool around. The major pieces are either aluminum or stainless steel on a 642...I wouldn't worry about it at all.

If you think that the finish looks bad on your 642 with two years of carry milage on it you should see my 342 also. Six years with that in my pocket has been real hard on the finish.

I have contemplated (I even called S&W's custom shop) refinishing it but I figure that the new finish would just wear off. I will carry the thing until I retire and then either sell it or refinish it.

I have a hard chromed Commander with about 10 years of wear on it and what appears as black streaks in the pics is actually polished finish from wear.
If your worried about banging your gun up, or scratches or wear spots on the finish, then dont use that gun for a carry piece. Anything that gets worn on a regular basis is going to show it, no matter how or what you carry it in. Pretty revolvers and pistols are nice, but I agree with JERRY, character marks on a gun(just like those of their owners) say more to me than all the pretty pics out there.

Good post idea. I wish I had a shot of my duty weapon. Beretta 96g 40 s&w. Beat to hell but ultra-reliable. Never missed a beat. Probably around 15,000 through it so far.

I have no problem with honest wear. It's abuse that frosts my pumpkin. I've found that dings I put in guns through normal use have sometimes become triggers for very fond memories. So I say use 'em and enjoy 'em.

Just this morning I was noticing backstrap wear on my 642-1....for about 2 seconds I contemplated refinishing her, then I thought hey, that just means you're using it for what you bought it to do, it ain't no collectors piece ;) .....good thread!!!!

Hello. I agree. There is nothing disgraceful with "honest battle scars" but cannot say the same for either rust on blued guns or neglect on any of them.

Best.

Looks

My 642-1 has several years of pocket carry--and a good bit of practice. High quality holster is used.

Mine looks somewhat better than the ones pictured. Trigger guard, and front of frame show some wear.

Credit high quality Null holster. :)

Master Blaster... nice thread... it's interesting to see pics with wear marks... only a few of my guns have wear marks because I have so many that most of them don't see a lot of use and I tend to handle them and shoot them with such care that they don't look used at all.

But I totally agree that having guns for use is important. I like the concept of having a number of guns, some of which are given gentle, occasional use and a others which are intended to be used often and heavily.

I find I can use a gun (if not carried in a pocket or holster) quite a bit without causing any noticible wear on it. But daily pocket and holster carry all day every day for years will certainly help it to accumulate some character, which is cool. I use some of my guns for home/RV defense use and occasional range use only and they're never holstered. These seem suspended in time from an appearance standpoint. But I find I have to use great care putting them in and removing them from the safe to avoid contact with the other guns in there during the handling process, but by exercising great care in this handling, they can look like new for a long time, even though they are handled and fired now and then.

For me, getting the guns in and out of the safe and setting them down on my desk, night stand, shooting bench, etc. are the major opportunities for accumulating dings and scratches, so I'm usually really careful when doing this. I tend to handle most of them a lot, so if I weren't so careful during this handling, they could become pretty marked-up up over time.

The few guns I'll carry in the glovebox of my car or carry on my person generally don't show much wear either (stainless helps in this regard and can be so easily "cleaned-up" to looking unworn). Often I will carry for short periods of time "mexican carry" in the small of my back. I can carry a gun (even a blued gun) in this manner extensively without seeing much, if any, wear. If I carry my 642 in a pocket, it's in my coat pocket with nothing else in there, but my hand on it from time to time... little if any noticible wear accumulates from this.

I have wondered about suggesting a hard chrome finish for the 642's that some have had and complained about the clear coat peeling off of... I think aluminum can be hard chromed (after a coating of nickel, I think)... and a hard chromed 642 would probably stand up to a heck of alot of use and show little wear - especially if the hardchrome had a brushed polished finish rather than matte.

I' have noticed that the matte finishes on stainless guns seem to show wear and dings much more readily than the polished finishes, because the wear spots are in effect "polished" smooth from the wear, creating a contrast to the areas which retain the original matte texture.

Of course to the guy who appreciates the wear character, refinishing may not be desired at all! I know I have a bit of a hang up about keeping my guns looking really nice... of course this hang up tends to apply to most of my "stuff". Funny thing, I bought an SP-101 to have a gun which I would feel much more at ease just knocking around with when I don't want to subject one of my Smiths to the "exposure". Even my SP still looks great. Go figure.
