Does anybody have a pietta 1851 civilan .44? there aren't alot of reviews or info on this revolver but the few reviews I have read say its a pretty good gun. I do know it has a steel frame and a silver plated backstrap/trigger gaurd(real silver? :scrutiny:) I also heard that the instruction manual says to keep the powder charge under 15 grains of 3f:confused: I'd think a steel frame might be able to take a little more than that.

heres the link to where I got my info-http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=U51NNU1D2NUYFLAQBBISCNNMCAEFEIWE?id=0012107214504a&navCount=5&podId=0012107&parentId=cat20817&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20720-cat20817&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20817&hasJS=true&_requestid=129313

Oh crap! Another gun I don't have.
I have it's brass frame sister and feel it well handle more than 15gr load. A steel frame 51 Navy in .44, I would start at 18gr and work to 22gr. I bet there are members here that shoot 28gr from similar revolvers with no problems at all. I'm sure they well chime in.

I believe it is German Silver plated over brass on the grip frame and trigger guard. Nice looking gun.

well, I know how I can get all the info on this revolver I want...buy it.

I've never had a black powder handgun of any kind, but I guess if I were to keep the charge nice and low that steel frame would hold out amlost forever. all I need is enough power for decent plinking and knocking of some of these pesky jackrabbits.

I shoot mine with 22 gr triple 7. I bought mine from the Possibles Shop when they were $169.00(now $179.00). It has 2 piece black plastic grips, I wish it had wood ones but at the price I paid for a new gun I can't really complain. Looking around for a pair of cheap wood ones but no hurry. I really like it and am looking for a second barrel to cut down and make a belly gun without ruining my original gun in case I want to switch between two uses. I can imagine getting hit by a .44 at close range would ruin one's day.

Update: I just scored a .44 cal barrel off of Gunbroker. I will use this one to cut down for a belly gun when the mood strikes - two guns in one.

Gaucho I have that same pistol I love that thing with 25 grains with a 454 ball all day long great pistol with the black grips but I wanted wood grips also just to be able to switch them out so I made these. The 2 photos are right after I made them so they were not mounted on the pistol just resting on the frame.

those grips are made from white oak then stained and varnished I am trying to add new items to the list all the time. I still need to get a belt sander before I can really get to work on grips but that purchase is in the near future. Gin I am gonna call you tuesday evening. Mad I saw your new toys in another thread looks really nice. But you havent gotten the 60s yet have you?

Tuesday's fine, Bigbadgun. There's no rush at all, I want your best leather making juices flowing when we talk. Just enjoy your trip.

BTW, really cool grips. Cutting the grips at that angle really brings out the the grain super nicely. Tiger striped white oak, oh yeah.

I got them, just haven't got TO them. Just took the fluted 60 apart. Need to address some rust issues. The silver front sight blade has black living things on it! Everyone of these guns that had any silver parts are just covered with crap. It's hard crusty stuff but I have managed to pick and polish it off and have good silver plate under it. The front sight on one is almost completely gone. I'm going to have to drill it out and make a new bead for it. I'm really having fun.
