I inherited, from my grandfather-in-law, a German Mauser 98 that had been “sporterized,” I suppose. The receiver had been drilled and tapped for scope bases, and a scope mounted. It had been re-barreled to .25-06. Also, the floorplate, spring and follower had been removed and a metal loop had been brazed on, evidently to take a detachable magazine (I never found one and was unable to find one that fit).

At first I didn’t trust the rifle. Grandpa Jimmy never met a piece of machinery he didn’t want to “improve” somehow, so I wasn’t sure what he had done to the Mauser. I’d never heard of .25-06, and because I didn’t know any better, I thought the receiver tapping was sort of Mickey Mouse. And who would do such a thing to a piece of military history, anyway?

I purchased a replacement trigger guard, floorplate, magazine spring and follower and installed them. I figured there was no more collector value because of the previous mods, so I also sanded the stock, filled in the flaws, and put a nice camo paint job on it. Then I took the rifle out and test-fired it (at arm’s length). It didn’t blow up, so I did some rudimentary sighting-in and got hits on paper.

I’ve always wanted a tactical-type rifle, like a Remington 700, but first it was financially prohibitive and now it’s not a priority. I know the Mauser will never be a 700 BDL, but I would like to make it a reasonable facsimile of a tactical rifle without going overboard with pricey and unnecessary add-ons. (Once upon a time, shortly after I purchased my SKS, I looked into turning it into a scout-type rifle with optics and aftermarket stock and the whole nine. And then I came to my senses and left it alone. Because it would always be, underneath, an SKS. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

I’d like to add taller scope rings (so the scope no longer prevents movement of the safety lever), a bipod, and a synthetic stock. (My first thought was to refinish the original stock with a spray-on texture coat, but at my personal hourly rate, I would lose money and still have a less-than-ideal solution.) What I want to avoid doing, above all else, is trying to turn a Chevette into a Corvette. Still, I understand that the 98 action has been the base of many a project gun because it’s a quality design.

So…am I being silly here? Should I just leave it as-is, in the safe? Should I say, “It is what it is and it will be nothing else,” and go buy a 700? (Yes, I know what some of you will say: “It’s your rifle; you can do what you want with it. Whatever makes you happy.”)

Conversely, is this something that can be done, but I really do have to spend oodles of cash to do it right? Or, knowing I’ll never have to take a high-pressure shot to save a nun holding a basket of puppies, can I make a decent stopgap shooter out of it for a couple hundred bucks?

Finally, any suggestions on gear (and/or pictures) from anyone who’s actually done it? I’ll take suggestions for the name, too. I’m partial to “Mall Ninja Mauser” or maybe “KrauTactical,” but I’m not married to either.

Thanks!

Hmm. I've been thinking: There's nothing wrong with my original stock. I could just stick a bipod on it and be done with it. :D

is this something that can be done, but I really do have to spend oodles of cash to do it right?
Yes.

Take the action apart from what sounds like a monstrosity, stick a custom barrel on there, get a good stock, and make it something decent if you're going to bother with it at all. That way, at the end, you "have something", rather than still just owning a sporterized Mauser. Mausers are Mausers, but a Mauser-actioned custom rifle can truly be something else.

Cheers.

Go for it!!!

I envy you! It sounds like a great project. It seems to me that you have the base for a great tactical rifle. Why spend $700 on a new Rem. (I have one and love it so no disrespect to Remy) when for less than half of that you can have a blast building a custom Mauser action rifle? I would love to do that...hmm, might start a thread just for that. 25-06 is a great round for anything from varmits to Whitetail. Spend the money on good components, spend as you can, take your time and enjoy to process. I would think stocks would be plentiful and you have a wide selection of scopes to choose from. Don't disparage yourself or this project...this is not a mall ninja endevor. You have a great opportunity to build a real respectable weapon.

the heavy lifting is done - just finish the project out and you'll have a nice rifle.

don't get taller rings for the scope - replace the shroud w/ one that does not have the safety on it, and replace the trigger w/ a decent side-safety (a la 700) trigger (a bold trigger, while not a great trigger, will work fine for $40-ish).

replace the stock w/ something non-military. the amount of drop on the military stocks makes comfortable shooting difficult w/ a scope. boyds will have one for you for not too much cash.

mausers have incredibly slow lock-time. it is the first design i've ever shot that i actually notice it. replace the firing pin w/ a lightweight pin and new spring, and you'll notice a pleasant difference there.

i don't have picture ability, but i have taken a mauser from mil-surp to custom hunting rifle, and am very satisfied w/ the result. there is so much information on mausers that you can do most or all of this yourself w/ some patience and a little cash.

good luck w/ yours!

as everyone has said...the rough work is done.

I have one sporter Mauser and one on a commercial action and both are wonderful rifles. the sporter is in 308 and the commercial is in 416 Taylor.
The 416 has a Timney featherweight deluxe with side safety. Works really good. The sporter has a Bold Premium without safety and it works just as nicely as the Timney. The Bold is at 2 lbs and the Timney is at 3.5 lbs.

Go get you a good laminate stock, some good glass if you don't already have it, a good trigger and replacement bolt shroud and you should be good to go.

You might want to head over to Midway and do a search for "Mauser 98". That will give you an idea of whats out there and what you can do. Of course you have to post pics and keep us up to date :)

This site has quite a bit of info on doing some work on your rifle yourself. If you haven't done it before, you can get a pretty good idea of what is involved before you get to the "oh ****" stage.

The .25-06 is a very good all around cartridge, but you will probably have to reload to get the most from it.

As long as you don't have any unrealistic expectations about your custom rifle being worth big bucks, this sounds like a great project.

No pimping. Ever. We can say upgrade... but NONE of you may say pimping. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Wow. I saw this thread and decided to post the exact same link that longrifleman posted in post #7.

Steve Wagner is a local guy. I shoot hi power matches with him and have been to his shop a few times. Steve doesn't pimp. Steve sporterizes... and maybe sometimes bubbas, but never pimps. That guy know his guns, that's for damn sure.

dont be fooled, a mauser done up the right way can walk circles around a rem 700
actually, the rem 700 is based off of the mauser desing. (almost all rifles now are)
but, if you take your time, you can make that rifle keep up with the best of em.

heres a pic of one i have just done. its my first and theres more that going to be done to it, but it shoots very well.

While I adore mausers, the cost-effective approach is to buy a new Savage 10FP if you want a "tactical" rifle. The mods to the mauser will cost more and it would take a lot of time and skill to get it to shoot up to or better than the Savage.

what rules??? small people can own guns too!!!:neener:

i just cant wait till i can buy him all sorts of rifles and shotguns and pistols, OH MY!

Oh God, here it comes. As soon as I saw the pics of the baby and the Mauser, I gave it 3 posts for a "4 Rules" post to appear. Boy was I wrong... very next post.

Brian, even if it isn't true, please post saying that you Photoshopped the baby into the Mauser picture, just for the sake of keeping this from turning into a "THE 4 RULES ARE SACRED AND SHOULD NEVER BE BROKEN!" thread. :D
