Am I the only one who thinks an Arsenal especially; and maybe even a MAK 90 stock; or even a Saiga; looks better than a a pistol gripped AK?

Maybe it's because you guys are more used to the pistol grip, and maybe it has to do with the fact that the thumbhole stock is sort of cop-out, but to me, the pistol grip on an AK looks like someone, took a piece of wood and crudely glued it on to the rifle.

Is there some functional purpose against the thumb stock?

My Sgl 20 has the satandard ak furniture. I will work just fine. But i Have handled a Mak 90 with a Dragunov stock and it felt really good. More like what i think of when I pick up a rifle. As far as looks I prefer the standard (pistol grip) look.

I have some thumbhole AKs that I'd never convert. To me a lot of the converted AKs lose the style or history or whatever it is from the original country. Go look at a nice Hungarian SA-85M or even an original thumbhole Romanian. Quality is far above what we see come in now. Even the MAK-90 that, at the time, was the low-end AK has better fit/finish/wood on it than almost any new AK.

I have a dragunov stock on my Saiga which is like a thumb-hole stock but has the adjustable cheek pad. This sports a 1-4x20 power scope and they compliment each other perfectly.
My Romanian sports the classic pistol grip and works great with the iron sights.
So I guess my depends on how the rifle will be set up.

To me, the standard AK grip isn't bad, but I want one of these someday:

That's the (relatively) new Hogue grip for AK type rifles.

I personally don't like thumbhole stocks, as the extra material on the bottom below your hand seems redundant, adding weight and bulk for no good reason and getting in the way. But I have seen some examples that look nice.

I had four variations of thumbhole AK stocks during the ban years and my .223 Saiga started out with the Dragunov stock, which worked very well. But after converting my Saiga 7.62x39 I could no longer live with the .223 Saiga trigger and converted it. Over the past couple of years I've been one by one converting all my thumbholes back to pistol grips.

The Chinese wood thumbholes were uniformly awful, but there was an ATI, I believe, Dragunov style polymer that was pretty good and my favorite was one from Global Trades that was very much like the thumbhole on the current CZ USA VZ52 "Sporter"

Unfortunately, most of the thumbhole stocks -- like the MAK-90 -- are examples of anti-sinister bigotry.

(ergo, they're made for right-handed shooters!)

did you mean to say "satandard", or was that a typo? either way i think i'll remember that... satan-dard

I just got one of them and it feels great. Definitely get it. They are also making a matching front handguard set as well for AKs.

They are nice and unlike some of the other Hogue grips (AR model comes to mind, made in Mexico) it's made in the USA so the parts count won't get screwed up.

I LEGALLY changed my SLR-95 over to the evil pistol grip. I still have the original stock if I ever decide to sell it.

In some states a thumbhole is the only type going...unless you're into the Saiga sporting config; which has bad balance, IMO.

As a lefty, with a drag stock on an S308, i don't care for it. The cheek ridge is sharp...great for righties, though. It worked just fine on my S410....where it'll go back. Ordered an SLR stock, it's coming in the mail. It that isn't better, i'll get out the rasp and palm sander; or just get a chunk of wood and make something cool.

Do those hogue grips come in Olive Drab? I might have to get some for my handguard.

I found the SLR 95 thumbhole uncomfortable. I also dislike the stupidity of the the government forcing cosmetic changes to rifles.
