Politicians often ban/put restrictions on pistol grips because it is a common feature found on assault rifles.

Who thinks pistol grips will make ANY difference at all when fallen into the wrong hands/someone planning to overthrow government/whatever other reason?

I personally think if some nutcase was planning to kill alot of people, I doubt the pistol grip will make any difference at all...

It depends entirely on the weapon and the application. It's a silly poll.

What is a pistol grip? The anti's say my shotgun has a pistol grip but it doesn't look anything like an AR or AK grip.

I also have to agree that this poll is meaningless. Whether or not a pistol grip makes a difference truely does depend on the use of the weapon and the individual situation. For example, a pistol grip on a shotgun wouldn't make skeet shooting easier in the slightest. But if you have a situation where you have to fire a carbine length rifle around a corner then a forward grip and pistol grip would be very useful.

The antis believe 'evil looking' matters, and just as silencers and flick knives were attacked as a result of movie hype, guns with pistol grips have had the same movie hype and hence news media attention. In so far as the activists and their 'just good friends' in the news media create reality and encourage copycats... they themselves make it come true.

Clayton Cramer has shown how the mass killers follow previous news reports, buying the same guns. The media emphasis on 'arsenals' created a pattern in copycats that they GET 'arsenals'. Pistol grips are part of what the media have promoted as a symbol of criminal power.

They should not be banned; rather, the social reward structure should be changed so that perverse behaviour is minimised.

Thats my vote too.

(although a pistol grip makes ANY firearm "more evil" so I guess it does make it more "effective" if the effect you're looking for is frightening antis  )

It's simply part of their incrementalist strategy.

It makes no difference if I shoot you with an FAL or an M1A, you're dead either way.

It makes them easier to fire from the shoulder but does not increase the power, rate-of-fire, or lethality of the firearm in any way. It's merely an ergonomic improvement over the comb grip.

Living in california and having off list lowers, I have to say that a pistol grip does make a difference, if the gun was designed to originally have one.

However, on a gun which wasn't designed originally to have a pistol grip, it makes almost no difference.

If anything, it adds a more comfortable grip when taking carefull aimed target shots.

I don't think it makes it easier to fire from the shoulder at all. I think it depends on the rifle. I can't imagine my AR without a pistol grip. On the other hand, I really can't imagine trying to add a pistol grip to my Rossi 92 levergun. That Rossi is very handy and easy to shoot from the shoulder.
