For those bullseye pistol shooters out there, I posted this on the bullseye list and thought I would share it here too.

I was thinking of a training idea to:

A) Reduce overall group size
B) Increase match confidence

I thought that if I train using undersized targets I would focus harder
on the center of the black and also feel more confident when shooting on
the normal sized targets.

To test this theory, I used 50 foot targets at 25 yards.

With the .22 I had a few white shots, several black shots and one group
with 5 tens in slowfire. The Timed and rapid was mostly in the black
with only a couple white shots.

With the .45 I was grouping rather well with most shots in the black
except for a few during slowfire. The timed and rapid was a bit more
challenging but most shots stayed in the black.

To test how well this worked I shot two sets of rapid fire cadence on
regular 25 yard targets using the .45. After shooting on the 50 foot
targets the 25 yard targets looked huge! I shot both targets VERY well.
I shot 99-6x on the first and 99-5x on the second.

I thought this worked very well for me and thought I would pass it on to
the group.

The range I practice at is roughly 10% longer than the ranges for NRA bullseye.

I have noticed a difference in my scores. They tend to be a few points higher than my practice scores.

My .45 scores though, aren't all that good. Mostly owing to my lack of regular practice with the .45...

I don't shoot bullseye anymore but I do a lot of dryfire for USPSA on reduced targets and it does help.

reduced scale targets

I've never shot on smaller targets with conventional bullseye to any great extent, but I do lots of my routine practice on NRA B-34 1/2 scale targets at 50 feet. And when I really want to work on accuracy, or when shooting the .22s, I use a B-29 1/3rd scale target.

I think you're probably on to something.I know shooting precision on smaller targets helped me for PPC and IPSC and IDPA.
