Planning on saving up for a FAL...

What should I get.
I know that DSA's are reportedly the best, but they will most likely be way out of my price range.
I know that Century FAL's are generally a luck of the draw, and I would prefer something a notch above one of those.
I am planning on having around $800 to put into one.
I would prefer a no frills, metric version that will work every time. I don't need a camo finish or a bunch of picatinny rails or even a scope mount.
Just a good reliable shooter.
What are your suggestions?

There's a DSA that you may be able to find for about $800. It's a parts kit with DSA receiver, IIRC, assembled by DSA. Most folks are happy with them.

Keep saving your money and get a DSA.

I went with the Armalite AR10 when I looked for a semi 308. But I am glad I saved up and got the best for me.

Of all the fal's I have seen, DSA has been the best in fit and finish. $800 is a lot of money, but a DSA is only a few more hundred. Whats a few hundred in the course of a lifetime?

See if you can't find an FFL out there that'll let you order through them to get DSA's dealer price. I got my DSA STG58 last spring for $815 shipped (+ $10 transfer fee.)

You might want to consider buying it a piece (or a few) at a time, and having it assembled at a later time by Arizona Response Systems (ARS) or another experienced builder. You can pick up an Imbel receiver for about $200- a handpicked lower and barrel for less than $200. Then buy the needed US made parts ($100) and send the whole thing to be assembled for about another $150. Use the other $100 for ammo.

From everything I've heard, the DSA's are superb rifles. A little on the highside, but they do come with a lifetime warranty.

On the flipside, if you want to customize your FAL, and create a specific variation, or FrankenFAL, you can put together your own parts kit, and send it off to a smith to be assembled.

I highly recommend the $800 DSA that JShirley is talking about. I own one and it is very solid and accurate, has never malfed (and thats after several thousand rounds) and is just plain stone cold reliable.
