Friends..

I was gifted this rifle... I know that the concept of a tactical lever action is just down right ridiculous to some.. But, I can see the value of this rifle..

1. It's very compact..

2. Has an adjustable stock (which makes the rifle fit me)

3. The night sights help the aging eyes...

So... from a utilitarian stand point... I really like it...

But this is my first lever rifle. Is there anything out of the ordinary that I need to know...

1. Will any .30-30 ammo work on a lever rifle... or must I purchase the rifle ammo with the safety tips due to the tubular design..

2. Any time saving tips on cleaning?

3. I know that there are at least two safeties on the rifle... can the rifle be safely carried with one in the chamber...with the safety on? Cocked and locked...or hammer down with safety on?

Thanks.

Any factory round nose ammo or the hornady leverevolution will be fine. I've never seen factory spire point, which would be the issue, only reloads (which you can still load two at a time, one in chamber one in tube.)

I have only disassembled it once to clean after a year of use. Usually just wipe it out after shooting, patch the bore and grease it up.

Yes, you can carry with one in the chamber and safety on. The tang safety prevents the hammer from contacting the firing pin. I carry with the hammer down.

I have a traditional 464 with a 20 inch barrel, which I like very much. I added a lo-pro skinner aperture sight (fine) and can usually keep three shots within 4in at 100 yards standing. Probably 2moa from a rest.

I wouldn't turn down one of the tactical versions, either.

Because .30-30 is so commonly used in rifles with tubular magazines any of the commercial ammo you buy will be safe to use in your new Mossberg. The Hornady Leverevolution ammo that has the "safety tips" is fairly new. The far more common ammo that is safe for use in tubular magazines is anything with a broad rounded tip or a flat nose.

If you reload do not confuse some of the hunting bullets that have hard plastic tips with the Hornady Leverevolution bullets that have the soft tip. The hard tips can still act like a firing pin just like a metal tip. It is ONLY the softer tipped Leverevolution bullets, along with the classic blunt nosed bullets that are safe in tubular magazines.
