Norinco SKS with a Tapco tacticool stock. What’s required to make this thing accept detachable mags? It looks like the original mag release is in place and the original mag is gone. I see a piece of metal in there towards the front, attached to the underside of the barrel. This piece has a notch cut into it that looks like it could be used to hinge the front end of a detachable mag. Does it sound like I just need some SKS detachable mags?

Rear part of the receiver, instead of the normal piece of stamped sheet metal, there’s some type of monstrosity; it replaces the normal receiver cover with a see-through optic mount. Anyone know where I could find a normal (original type) piece?

Thanks Much!

The duckbill type standard SKS detachable mags should drop right in (maybe with minor fitting) if you can't find an original style mag for it.

You could call Sarco and ask. Numrich lists the complete mag assembly but says they're sold out.

The dustcover atop the back of the SKS should be a lot heaver than the sheet metal dustcover on the AK. I've seen, maybe even had, an aftermarket dustcover that incorporated a scope mount. Won't be accurate, though; the dustcover moves around too much. To make it work, you need at minimum the version that has a couple of heavy screws that tighten against the receiver to lock things in place.

My limited experience with detachable magazines for the SKS is not all that great. The bolt must be back to remove or to insert the magazine. Otherwise, the magazine lips hit the underside of the bolt.

I did once have a 20 round (Chinese made, I think) fixed magazine for an SKS. It replaced the standard 20 round fixed mag, and it could be loaded from the standard 10 roudn stripper clips.

There are AFTERMARKET detachable SKS mags. We call the "Duck Bill" magazines because they have a big appendage on the front of the mag to lock it into the old pin for the factory fixed mag.

USA Magazines, Ram Line and Tapco make these magazines. Some work OK, some can be made to work OK and some are garbage that can never be made to work. Very hit and miss with what will or won't work....

Your best bet is to buy an orginal style stock, and an orginal 10rnd fixed box mag and put it back to factory specification.

Thanks Everone!

If it were mine, I'd restore it best I could to a standard SKS, but this is a project for a friend of mine (kinda). I'm going to take the wheel on it to get him where he's ready to go because he's asked me to and if I didn't, I don't think it would get done (everyone's got a friend like that).

Thank you for the info on an original dust cover! The current dust cover/mount has tension on the receiver in four spots, so I guess it would be considered the 'better' of the dust cover mounts. Kinda hate to ask, but what's that thing worth? I'm going to try to sale it to re-coup some costs on this. Photos:

On the detachable mags, are steel mags easier to retrofit to work or is it just a total crap shoot? I don't know why, but my buddy really likes this thing and I would wager he would depend on it if needed in a serious situation. He is intent on detachable mags, but I could convince him otherwise if detachable mags = unknown dependability.

My experiance with duck-bill SKS mags is, they aren't worth the trouble.

It takes three hands to hold the bolt open, operate the mag release, and insert another mag.
And a while to reload the empty mag with loose rounds again.

While you are going that?
You can lay down 50 - 60 rounds using 10-shot SKS stripper clips in the standard SKS 10-shot magazine.

Yeah, an original 10 round fixed magazine (or one of those 20 round fixed Chinese mags) is what you want, plus a few bucks worth of stripper clips. Detachable mags turn a what should otherwise be a completely reliable rifle into a question mark.

Too bad the stock is gone.

I have both a Chinese stock and a Russian(1954 Tula) as well as the top cover (stamped 1954 with the Tula Arsenal mark) if you are interested. I also have a few extras such as a blade bayonet, metal handguards(one with shell deflector) bipod etc.
