Hi,
I recently purchased a brand new Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine, and took it out to the range first time today. The first 50-75 rounds I put through it went pretty well except a few jams and a few occasions where the first round of the mag would not strip into the chamber. I figured this was alright since it's just a plinker and probably needs to broken in well before it becomes more reliable.

Then, suddenly, it started dropping the mag after every shot. I've got five 15-round mags from three different sources that did the same thing, so I know it's not the mags. Every time I would load a mag and fire, the mag would just fall out...every freaking time. Keep in mind that this didn't happen once during the first 50-75 rounds.

The 10-round mag I have would not drop out, it worked fine. (I think the extra weight of the loaded 15-round mags has something to do with it).

When I checked the mag release, it seemed to be functioning like it should, moving freely back and forth smoothly. I then would load a mag, and pull it as hard as I could, and it would stay in place no problem. I think what we figured out was that somehow, the recoil would make the mag release move just enough to drop the mag, but why were the first 75 rounds trouble-free?

Not only was the problem embarassing (public range), but very disappointing. Combined with the jams, failure to feeds, and the mag dropping, I feel like I paid $600 for a total lemon.

Please advise me as to what I should do. Do they make a stiffer/stronger mag release spring that would hold it in better. Should I switch the parts with G.I. surplus parts? (I would like to avoid dealing with the hassle of trying to send it back to A. O...their customer service is not the greatest)

Thanks in advance and PLEASE keep the "should have gotten one through CMP" comments to yourself.

KR: The parts you're talking about are cheap enough that it'd probably amount to a quick fix for you.

I have fooled around with the carbine platform for way over forty years and nearly every malfunction I've ever seen was mag. related, mainly failing to feed or allowing a cartridge to "jump" free of the mag.. usually thats due to damaged feed lips.

Yours is kinda unique, I don't recall ever hearing of a gun dropping the stick such as you describe but its probably weak springs,( assuming the mag retaining tips are in good shape, also are those mags GI? Some of the aftermarket stuff is not too well made) For good measure, replace the spring the detent and try to get an M2 catch with the projecting tip.

Shotgun News, Numrich are good starts & by the way, the last order I made with Numrich arrived in about three days....amazed me!

It is a new gun SEND it back to the manufacture and have them deal with it. Make them pay the shipping too.

Yeah, they were all unissued GI mags.

The guys over at Firing Line also said try an M2 catch, so I'll definately do that.

How will I tell which one is an M2 catch instead of M1?

+1 The CMP is certainly the way to go. The Ordnance Chorps tested and retested and the quality of a USGI carbine is often replicated but hardly duplicated and definitely can't beat the CMP for the money. If you do not like what you receive from the CMP they will work with you.

It's a new gun, let Auto Ordnance fix it. Sounds like it might be insufficient tension on the mag catch.

Re the M2 catch: When the 30 round mag was introduced for use with the M2 Carbine, it was found that the original M1 mag catch wasn't quite strong enough to support the weight of the heavier 30 round magazine. M2 catches can be recognized by an extra leg on the left side.
