My brother-in-law just got his father's old H & R Sportsman, .22 LR, break open revolver. He could not, for the life of him, figure out how to break it open to load it. I came over to his house to see it. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to break it open. I've never used or handled a top-break revolver, and neither has he.

Can somebody with some knowledge please help us out? Thanks.

Its really as simple as Sm says it is.................just lift up on the rear sight.

Enjoy - they are great accurate pistols and a ball to shoot! Mine is my grandfathers pistol I was given when he passed away a few years back! The hammer is actually a new one he made (he was a tool and die guy) after my dad dropped it (when he was a kid) while practicing fast draw with blanks in the basement.:D

The Sportsman 999 is my favorite .22 revolver of all time, hands down. Big, big fan of that gun, and I wish that it were possible to buy a new one in stainless today.

I have 2x sportsman revolvers. For some reason I see them more often in my area than the more modern 999 version. I like them but my 1941 version has an annoying habit of producing light firing pin strikes, maybe it needs a good claning and/or a new mainspring?
