Got this savage 99 in 300 savage, and it has a .410 barrel with it. beautiful furniture, maybe 98% condition. Looks to never have been fired. serial 237xxx. Anybody know where I can get info on it? date of mfg, is it a special run? approx value, that sort of thing.

Do you have the factory hard box with it??

Is the serial number 6 digits or 5??

Also here is a pretty good site.

http://www.savage99.com/savage99_dates.htm

Early 300_ 4/10 combos with the box can approach $3000 or better. (I have personally seen an unfired one in factory box sell for over $5000 about 3 years ago)

6 digit number. no box unfortunately. according to the date code finder you linked that gun is a 1921 mfg. there is no way it wasn't refinished at some point for it it look like that 90 years later. maybe the judge brought a gun in to be completely reworked and fancified, then never came back for it.

I have seen some pretty remarkable original guns but with the butt being altered and if it has been refinished then yes value has gone way down....but with that said with both barrels I would still bet you might approach 12-1500 for it with the right buyer...maybe..

well that is significantly more than I paid for it. I just wanted to check and make sure I didn't have something truly valuable in my hands before I took it hunting. If it was a true collectable I wanted to pass it on to a collector and keep looking for a shooter. If it's just a pretty shooter, well, I like a pretty shooter.

The refinishing is pretty good and would probably have passed muster, but the stock has been sanded and lost its sharp edges an IIRC Savage did not engine turn their bolts.

I am partial to the 99 myself. Have lots in my safe from generation's before me. Love to shoot and hunt with them. I would myself defiantly use it. Probably even would if a high dollar one too unless you are useing it as an envestment. Nice thing about that caliber is ammo is getting better to find too.

Do the .410 shells feed from the magazine, or single load? Seems even 2.5" .410 would be long for the action.
