Would it be possible for a good smith to rechamber a Kel-Tec PLR-16 in .300 Blackout caliber? I thought this would make a great home defense gun. I've heard others say the gun would be great for that if it weren't for the HUGE fireball and noise. If I could get one in 300 Blackout, use 220 grain subsonic ammo, and put a suppressor on it, I think I'd have a superb little gun.

I live in a small mountain town in Utah, a VERY gun friendly state. I think this would be an absolute blast to own, even if it was just to shoot recreationally.

You'd have to re-barrel. If some one makes a barrel for it, shouldn't be too hard, but why not just get an AR 9mm pistol instead of going off on a tangent, unless that is waht you really want. I mean the price of 147gr 9mm practice ammo compared to 220gr sub-sonic .300 BO would seem compelling to me unless you reload.

A PLR16 in .300 blackout would be a real sweet gun, but I think that the cost of having one made would quickly get prohibitive, especially when compared to an AR pistol with a folding brace which would be easier to get and shorter when folded.
If you reload you could also try and set up a PLR16 to run 223 heavy subsonic loads, although that would be an endeavor on its own.

While it won't be .300 blk subsonic quiet, 5.56 can absolutely be brought under 140 dB, even with the PLR's 9.2" tube. As well, I'll take 5.56 with a good 50 or 55 gr. expanding bullet over subsonic .300 blk loads for defense any day and twice on Sunday. I have a 10.5" .300, not overly enamored with it. Yeah, it's quiet, but good 'ol .45 ACP 230 gr. hollowpoints are also subsonic, and more devastating than a heavy .30 cal pill which is basically a fat ice pick at 1,000 FPS.

As for rebarreling a PLR, I haven't looked at mine in awhile and it's out in the truck, but I'm pretty sure they're molded in the polymer; not really serviceable.
