In the "I'm not getting any better" thread someone mentions PRACTICAL SHOOTING, BEYOND THE FUNDAMENTALS by Brian Enos. Is the first book called PRACTICAL SHOOTING ? I'm trying to teach myself to shoot my 9mm semiauto Makarov. The only book I have is BULLEYES DON'T SHOOT BACK by Col. Rex Applegate. I would like to learn both point and sighted techniques. Can you suggest a book for someone who's trying to teach himself?

THANKS!

The "Beyond Fundamentals" part is the subtitle of his book PRACTICAL SHOOTING.

You may want to browse through his website and forum. BE

I found both of these books to be very good. The first book starts from the VERY beginning with how to properly grip a pistol and proper stances. I believe it also includes sections on close contact shooting (I don't have it handy at the moment). The second covers tactical scenarios, including room clearing and such. Gabe Suarez is a very clear writer, and includes plenty of photos and illustrations.

I'll cast a second vote for "Surgical Speed Shooting" by Stanford. It's very clearly written and shooters of all skill levels can benefit from reading it.

Another vote for also getting an instructor/coach. The books and videos are fine, but an instructor can make on the spot corrections. Especially of the things that you just know you have down pat but don't.

It's surprisingly easy to take the wrong grip on the pistol, or position your finger on the trigger incorrectly time after time but be absolutely convinced you've done it correctly.

Bad habits once learned can be very hard to break and impede your progress.

Good luck.
