I ALWAYS had a knife in my pocket. I grew up on a ranch, and carrying a knife was (and is) second nature to me. Is wasn't exactly kosher with school policy (graduated 1996) but teachers were more than happy to look the other way...until they needed a knife and asked to borrow one from a student LOL. In all honesty though, knives were so commonplace they never raised an eyebrow. Heck, I wasn't the only kid who drove to school (21 miles for me, one way) and kept a firearm or 3 in the vehicle. I drove by/through much of our ranch on the way to and from school, and it only made sense to travel armed so that I could hunt on my way home without driving all the way home and then backtracking. It wasn't uncommon to see shotguns and rifles in gun racks in the school parking lot...again, not in line with offical policy, but always tolerated. I often had a revolver in the glove box, loaded, as well, as I had my CCW most of my senior year (eligible at 18 in SD). All in all, it was a different world 13 years ago, and because no one ever misused any of the equiupment in question (knives and guns) no one ever made an issue out of it.
