polarized fishing glasses cheap vs expensive

I don't wear glasses yet and still have 20/10 in one eye and 20/20 in the other. Cheap clear saftey glasses will give me a headache but for some reason I am fine with the inexpensive sunglasses.

I also have a few pair of very expensive ones too but I rarely use them as I go through the cheap ones rather quickly. I replace them as they get scratched, more often than not because of my neglect, not being a "glasses" guy.

+1 on Cocoons over prescription glasses. They run about $50-60, seem to have good optical quality. I have copper lenses for sunny days, yellow for cloudy.

My take.

I pay whatever it takes for proven/established UV protection.

Spent several months in the desert years back with poor UV protection on cheap - though otherwise seemingly effective glasses. Big mistake.

When i had lasix surgery, eye dr (md) recommended i get a good pair of sunglasses and wear them whenever outside. I had the start of cataracts at a young age. Possibly related to being outside without sunglasses every chance i had.

A retired optomitrist advised that any good quality sunglasses meeting with uv and impact certifications would be fine.

For years, i wore stihl sport sunglasses and was fairly content (they prevented a wire from hitting my eye while weedeating - possibly sabing that eye). I lost a bunch of them and had others stratched up.

My wife (an md) bought maui jims. Before going on an extended trip to the philippines, i gave in and got some costas with the 580 lenses with strap.

I have broken an earpiece. Sent in with $12 inspection fee. Were promptly returned fixed at no additional charge. Dont see certain green shades (like some credit card readouts) as well. See other stuff better. Fit is great. Nosepiece very comfortable. I like them.

I also have some underarmor sunglasses i bought during a period while i had misplaced the costas. For me, they are a good less expensive backup; but arent as nice overall. I use both.

I use $20 dollar clip-on Polaroid's over my regular glasses to vac and clean out the bottom of my Koi fish ponds.

I doubt you could do any better seeing through the surface sheen spending 5-10-15 times as much on 'fashion brand' Oakley glasses.

This is where I'm at. Because you already have the frames all you are paying for is the lens. I get mine from my eye doctor and he claims they are of good quality. For about the price of the designer type sunglasses I can get prescription polarized glasses. Doubt if the Maui Wowies have better glass.
