As for an English teacher - that would be useless because they know nothing about AP style. If you don't know what that is, you're not educated enough on the topic to be critical of a journalist

Sorry, but "AP Style" is to English as McDonald's hamburgers are to cuisine.

Good shooting.

In Texas it doesn't matter if you shoot them outside or inside. You can even shoot them through the door.
(as long as the shooter stays within the use of deadly force laws and it appears that the homeowner did)

Now that we have the "Castle Doctrine" you can't be sued in a "good shooting".

"When the elderly man discovered the intruder in the backyard, a struggle ensued and the intruder was shot at least once in the chest."

guess the details of the struggle is the key.

i'm not sure i feel altogether comfortable with this shoot (sounds to me like a drunk more than a killer) ... but a man's home is his castle.

hindsight is 20/20, but if was me and the juan doe (lol) in question was in the backyard, i would have just locked the doors and waited for the cops.

i'm wondering if all of this could have been avoided if the folks in question locked their doors (if they didn't).

I can't see it as anything but a legal shoot. It does not matter to me how drunk or sober a person is, if they physically atttack me on my own property I am going to use what ever force I have to to end the attack. If I happen to be an eldrely man my best choice of force would probably be a gun.

Well, If I am kind enough to not shoot someone that enters my house and I let them go, I reserve the right to investigate my property afterwards, or anytime.

If Mr Tresspasser does not get the message to leave and I investigate and find him still there, and he engages in violence, I would probably shoot too..

Based on that, I say clean shoot!

Yep ol' good Texas. lol I've been here for 5 years now, well 3 don't count the 2 I spent in the giant litter box (Irak)
If the shooting is up to law, we have the castle doctrine nothing will happen to the elderly guy.

And yes you have all the right to defend your property besides you don't have the duty to retreat here.

Good ol' Texas :D

Why should I have to lock the doors on my property? You made it sound a little like opened doors force criminals to enter houses. If I want to open my door I will, and if a trespasser enters my house knowing it isn't his and enters in a threatening manner I will in fact shoot them. I have no clue who you are if you randomly enter my house without permission or warning. I'm not saying we should take potshots at the mailman, but if someone is an intruder they know what they are doing.

I didn't realize that Mexicans wandering into other people’s houses was an epidemic. I had that happen a few years ago too. A Mexican fellow opened the door and strolled right on into my apartment as I sat on the couch watching a baseball game. Freaked me out. I didn’t shoot him but he did get an expertly administered cussin and a good look at one of my revolvers.

Apparently he was looking for the previous resident.

well, i'm gonna get an earful of flame for this, but just because shooting a stranger in your backyard is legal, doesn't necessarily mean it is always ethical.

again, i don't know the details of what transpired ... so i'll just shut up for now.

Good shoot.

But why don't people just lock their doors? If the intruder had a gun drawn and simply strolled in your house... you would be at a disadvantage.

I think I am going to move back to Texas. This is good. I am Latino, but if someone ask me to leave, heck I will do. I do not want my Latin a$$ shot!! :neener:
