Police officer shot by own weapon at elementary school
Associated Press

CARROLLTON, Ga. - A police officer arriving at an elementary school to teach a Drug Awareness and Resistance Education class was accidentally shot in the left leg by his own gun as he was getting out of his patrol car Tuesday, officials said.

Officer Duke Fontenot was taken to Tanner Medical Center-Carrollton, where he was treated for the wound behind Carrollton Elementary School about 1:30 p.m.

The DARE class was cancelled but other classes continued as scheduled, Carrollton schools Superintendent Tom Wilson said.

No children were in danger when the gun went off, Wilson said.

Under police department rules, no guns are worn in the elementary school, and Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and put it on the car seat when it went off, the superintendent said.

Maybe that's why the police don't want the public to have guns , the see so much incompetence among their own. " no children were endangered " ??? with an AD in a school ??

If the first two don't count...

My third guess would be a Glock.
They have a bad reputation for going off when least expected. Sort of like the SUV's that Rush talks about.

I wonder if they provided the D.A.R.E. officer with a secure lock box in his vehicle? Poor training is the cause of this ND, not the weapon they issued. The muttonheaded policy of no guns in the elementary school contributed.

Soooooooo, if a punk comes to school and starts shooting kids when a cop is there.......then there is nothing the cop can do to stop it!!!!!!!!!!

Dang... we sure have some smart folks running the show!!!!!!!!

Abenaki........still shaking his head!

Maybe - it was indeed preferable that this particular guy did have his ND in or near the cruiser - at least no one else got hurt!!

Leaving that aside ... it is crazy beyond belief that a cop should have to disarm for entry to a school ..... if anyone can .. it should be them (as well as us!).

Grrr

This is what it should say:

No children were in danger when the officer accidently/negligently fired the gun.

Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and put it on the car seat when it went off, the superintendent said.
Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and was putting it on the car seat when he fired it because he wasn't paying attention to what he was doing.

Due to useless bureaucrats making ludicrous police department rules, no legal guns are to be worn in the elementary school, even though there is little to stop illegal guns from entering the school. Therefore, police officer Fontenot had to create an unnecessary dangerious situation by removing his weapon from his holster and handling it, in a public parking lot, within the cramped confines of his police cruiser, which may or may not even have a proper place to secure the weapon from illegal access. This lack of forethought when combined with lack of proper training (also due to the aformention beurocratic stupidity) resulted in an injured officer.

However, in our present reality, it appears that the universe will implode if a story is reported placing blame where it actually belongs. :banghead:

you fools!!!! it was no accident! that gun INTENTIONALLY DISCHARGED itself! fortunately the gun has poor eyesight and didnt know that it wasnt aiming at a poor defenseless child.

Poor muzzle control &

Can anybody verify exactly what make of gun is involved?

This is part of reason I object to stores/banks/post Officer having no guns allowed. MOST dangerous time is when permit holder is trying to (without being noticed/seen) remove loaded gun and keeping it hid move it to the car where it can easily be stolen.
Uniformed Officer with empty Holster IMO looks like he just got FIRED.

That's no big surprise. Didn't you hear about the Washington DC detectives; not policemen - DETECTIVES, who mounted new laser sights on their Glocks and ACCIDENTALLY shot through the walls of their office to the outer office and wounded two officers.

Strange but true.

I swear, guns (and SUVs) are pure evil. If we don't ban those useless killers we'll all be dead before we know it.

Sarcasm Alert!

My Glock only goes off when I pull the trigger. No finger on the trigger, no bang.
I have that same problem. I have been trying for years to train my guns to shoot by thyemselves so that I don't have to waste my time driving around and massacring innocent people manually. :banghead: :banghead:

ysr_racer; You're quite right that is is the operator, not the gun that is the issue. ANY gun will fire is some bonehead pulls the trigger when he/she shouldn't. My local PD issues the Glock and I have never heard of a single ND/AD.

I've had a glock for years

and it has never "gone off"!
I had an ND once, with a hi power clone, but my finger brushed the trigger.:banghead:
You can bet your assets I don't do that no more!
