Police officer shot by own weapon at elementary school

Under police department rules, no guns are worn in the elementary school, and Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and put it on the car seat when it went off, the superintendent said.

Now the bliss-ninnies have come to fear guns so much that the previously untouchable gun-experts (the police) are also subject to asinine irrational rules. Disarming a cop while telling him to keep his uniform and shiny targ-- I mean, badge on is crazy. The tools necessary for the job must be on the job. I'll add this to the list of why I never want to be a school resource officer...

On the SEAT?!??!

Any one see a problem with putting it on the car seat?! What else did he put in the seat? Pens? clipboard? anything that can wedge in the trigger? I can't think of a worse place to put a gun besides in the front of your pants waistband. Of course maybe this could have effectively taken him out of the gene pool. What about the rest of the junk on his belt catching the gun? That poses a potential hazard as well. What else on their bat belt can get caught in the trigger? Main Idea? Lets put our guns in a place of least mobility and random items floating around. Or if not, (if the glove box is full) have a spare holster to cover that trigger for storage. Sorry, don't think a car seat is the best idea for a gun. Hopefully we now have somone a little wiser guarding our streets.

Why take the gun out of the holster? Just remove the holster with the gun in it. This would have prevented this problem at that time. Place it in the glove compartment or under the seat.

A little fore thought would have gone a long way here.

Yeah, that's a really safe for it while inside teaching the class ... like no kids are going look inside a police car parked by the school?

I remember when we had LEOs show up at our school of PR reasons. Lucky for them they were in full battle dress and never had to remove any article of the uniform.

I live where this happened, Carrollton Ga
apparently he was taking it out of an ankle holster when it "went off"

BlackTalon - please tell us what firearms are authorized by the involved agency.

Why would he need to remove a gun from an ankle holster?

If the policy for not carrying in school was to prevent the children from fixating on the gun the ankle gun wouldn't matter since it would never be seen.

When I was a kid if a cop had come to my school with an empty holster i would have been staring wondering why he had lost it. :scrutiny:
