Gun in bookbag discharges in Ohio classroom, injuring 7-year-old boy in hand, authorities say

(AP) - COLUMBUS, Ohio-A gun in a bookbag discharged in an elementary school classroom Monday and the primary school student who brought it was shot in the hand, police said.

The injury to the 7-year-old was not believed to be life-threatening. Police were uncertain why the gun went off.

"It happened in the classroom, just as they were taking their coats off," police Sgt. David Sicilian said.

Columbus schools did not cancel classes, but some parents took their children from Leawood Elementary School. There were 15 children in class when the .45-caliber pistol gun went off, Sicilian said.

The boy's mother "indicated she had no idea where the weapon came from," Sicilian said.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital, but the mother would not authorize the release of any information about his condition, said Amy Ranalli, a hospital spokeswoman.

Kim Bell, 46, standing outside of the school with her son, said teachers tried to keep the shooting quiet so not to scare the other children.

"It's a very good school, very good teachers," she said. "It's not a school a kid would bring a gun to."

Well the first one may not be so bad. A loose gun in a book bag could have the trigger pulled by something other than a finger. Possible and not too far fetched.

Edit: You are right that "why" does not matter so much as "how." Should read: "The police do not yey know what cased the gun to be fired."

It is also possible that the mother did not know where it came from. Should know -- yes.

The last one is stupid, but is just a quote from a stupid bystander. It is now a school that a kid did bring a gun to.

The gun just 'went off' and hit the kid in the hand.

The kid who brought it.

Could it be that this kids hand was also inside the bookbag at the time, maybe?

And it seems to me that this article is making the injured boy out to be the victim - "The bad gun went after him!!"

The story now is that the kid found the gun on his way to school. The gun went off when he dropped his bookbag while putting it in his locker. However, given the propensity of the Columbus School District to change stories the circumstances could be different on the 5pm news. :what:

Newspaper Story this Morning

I think we ought to get this kid and the federal "professional gun handler" together and use them as Eddie Eagle traveling teaching tools.

Or at the very least a two volume DVD set on "How to shoot yourself without really trying."

There are only two reasons why folks say really stupid stuff like that: (1) They engage their mouth before they turn their brain on, or (2) They have very little brain power to engage.

WHY are "they" allowed to get away with things like this coming out of their mouths?

The leftist extremist presstitutes sincerely believe they're entitled to tell any lie or slant the facts to any degree they possibly can to portray both firearms and firearms owners as enemies of society.

Their goal is socialism. As far as they're concerned, their ends invariably justify the means.
