in about a month i'm going to be in the market for a handgun, with a budget of about $450. i was going to get a P99 last year, but at the last moment my money evaporated in a couple unexpected expenses, so needless to say i've been suffering. especially every time i go with my friends when they pick up a new gun :cuss: :p i was looking through the CDNN catalog, and i saw a few that catch my fancy. I can get a handselected P220 with k-kote and night sights for $399, a P228 with the same options for the same price, or a P229 in 40 or .357 sig, hand selected with night sights for $419. i'm not really interested in the P226 or the P225, for those of you who have seen the current catalog. i want something to conceal, but the P220 is really enticing. the only Sig i've actually fired extensively is the P220, and i adore it. with all that in mind, what would you guys buy?

You can't really go wrong with a SIG if it fits your hand. I had a nice 220 with Night Sights and the K-Kote finish and I really liked it. The only problem was that it really didn't fit me that well so I sold it.

If it were me, I would look for a Beretta 9mm or a Glock. I see them as Police trade ins sometimes. I like the Beretta 92G and the Glock 19 3rd gen in particular but that is just me.

I have seen those used SIGs and it makes me sad that they don't fit my hand because they are one of the best guns you can buy otherwise. My SIG 220 was accurate and reliable and it was a .45acp.

the Sigs, at least the P220, fit my hand very well. i can easily hit all the controls, and recoil control is a snap. how well does the P220 conceal with an IWB holster? i'm a pretty big guy (6", 220), so i think i could probably conceal it pretty well with a good holster.

I have seen rumors of Police trade in 225's. That's my vote (other). I seriously regret not picking one up. Now that I am in the PRK, the likely hood of me getting one is slim to none.

Any of the SIGs are good guns. I have totally unsubstantiated, illogical, and foolish reservations about anything bigger than 9mm with an aluminum frame, which is why I have a P220ST. Please, don't ask me to explain ...

My P228 is a thrill to shoot, and the gun is very controllable getting you back on target for quick followup shots.

I'm going to shock those who know me by recommending the SIG P220. ;)

Seriously, though; you said yourself you've fired one and really liked it. You've answered your own question.

The 220's are nice, the 228's are nice and the Delta Elite used by some police departments would make one HELL of a trade in.

of the choices listed, I'd get teh P200 and the P228. The 228 goes on my belt and the 220 goes in the safe for shooting days.

Both could serve as home defense.

I'd get the 228 first though.

Back in the day, I would've said "a Model 10." But those days have just about gone.

Nowdays, I like best for open carry as a main battery pistol the P220.

But if you're going to have to carry concealed, may I suggest the P229? It's surprisingly compact. I was amazed that departments are issuing it as a main battery sidearm. Check out the picture of my buddy's PD pistol in my hand:

i got to shoot my friends 228 and 229. wow! what amazing guns! i think i've made my decision, and i'm going to get the 229. i'm glad i got to shoot them. thanks for your advice, everyone.

You made a good decision, but any of them would have been wise.

I just acquired a P220 trade-in; tritium sights, a little holster wear, but it's certainly not hurt or abused. In fact, it feels like it's not broken in yet. However, a lot of the Israeli P228's I've been seeing are showing signs of just how much they train over there.

I'm very pleased with my P220. My P229 has the big brother it always wanted.

Regards,
Rabbit.
