I have an older blued Colt Detective Special. The blue finish is not worn or scratched, it's just a little dull looking. Anyone know of a polish that is safe to use that will bring back some of the shine and not remove the bluing?
Thanks, JW

Have you tried just a good wipedown with some CLP using a soft cloth (like a diaper)?

Flitz

A light application of Flitz Wax (don't rub aggressively on blued guns) followed by a coat of wax should fix you up.

Speciality waxes for guns are available. I find Prestone High Protection Synthetic Wax to do the job better than anything else I've tried...plus it's Cheap! Most automotive parts stores have it in the big blue bottles for $3.00 +/-.

For me, the wax last longer than oil for surface protection. Finger prints no longer are a problem...lots of positives.

Here are pics of two of my revolvers "Flitzed and Waxed." The first one is a early 70's S&W model 36-no dash...the second is mid 70's Ruger 3-screw SBH.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. One fellow from way up north in Alaska told me that Eskimos have been using Johnson's Paste Wax for ever to protect their blue shotguns and rifles, interesting. Thanks again, JW

I'm not an Eskimo, but I've been using it about three decades now without encountering any problems.

cocked and locked - im taking your advice. have always used johnson's or turtle wax. prestone being synthetic peaks my curiosity. first time i hear

Another paste wax fan here, great for waterproofing guns. I especially like to use it inside the barrel channel of muzzleloaders. I have always thought those long, slender forends need extra protection to prevent moisture absorption.

Paste wax the heck out of any type of gun before hunting in inclement weather. Works a treat!
