Do you think it's a good idea to allow college students to carry handguns on campus?

Here's the article:

December 14, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Some university officials are concerned about a state senator's proposed legislation that would allow some college students to carry guns for self-protection on campus.

GOP State Senator Hank Erwin of Montevallo has offered the bill for the legislative session, which starts February 5th. Under his proposal, students would have to meet several conditions, including being enrolled in an ROTC military training program, having no felony or misdemeanor convictions, and completing a gun skills course.

Jacksonville State University President William Meehan told the New York Times Regional Newspapers that he opposes the bill.

Auburn spokeswoman Deedie Dowdle said the idea probably wouldn't go over well with parents or campus security officials.

Kellee Reinhart, spokeswoman for the University of Alabama System, said officials have not studied the bill and she declined comment.

Erwin said arming students could help in situations like the April mass-shooting at Virginia Tech. He introduced similar legislation late in the 2007 legislative session - it died in a Senate committee.

A spokeswoman for Governor Bob Riley said he has not read the bill and had no comment.

As a college student, the only problem I have with this bill is that it only applies to ROTC students. I'm not in ROTC and I'd like to be able to depend on something other than my box cutter (also against The Rules:mad:) to defend myself from the next guy gunning to beat Cho's score.

I'm a college student also, and I really don't want to carry on campus. Honestly, schools need to get on the ball and secure their campuses. I have enough to worry about (grades, exams, papers, research, etc) than worrying about my security on school grounds. Most colleges I've been to are open to the public (as in anyone can just walk in). As a PhD student, I rarely go on campus anymore, but I know that the issues I've heard of are mostly off campus.

I'm 100% "shall issue", but seriously, if it gets to the point where students (including myself) have to carry (on top of all the other BS we have to deal with) to feel safe, then the school systems need to re-think their priorities. I don't think the answer is let students carry on campus. Schools need to step up and take some action on improving their security.

I agree. You shouldn't have to carry. But you should have the choice. The poll isn't asking if we should have to carry, it's asking if we should be allowed.

The 2nd Amendment grants us the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn't say when, or where. If I were going to college, I would want to carry, just as I want to carry anywhere else I go.

Voted for carry. Hades, I'm a graduate professor and I say yes, allow carry. What's the problem? I know...preaching to the...

I am one year from graduating and I have to admit with as much money as we give them security should be better. I often thought with 5 guards at a desk and only one or two patrolling, a terrorist could start with one grenade and he/she could effectively eliminate 80% of my protection. :what: The desk commandoes we have are police retirees and sick, lame, and lazy. I just wish I could feel safe, but the reality is I take all online classes because I dont.
I avoid campus! The signs on the doors just re-inforce the fish in a barrel feeling I used to get sitting in class watching professors pick fights with the ones they wanted out of their class. I kept thinking it just takes one to go over the edge. Now that I am in upper 400 classes it is a little less worrisome.

gravis86: I was just stating an opinion about the poll itself and the situation. I agree with your statement about the 2nd amendment and would never vote against it. But considering that my daughter, in the future, might have to carry while at college to ensure her safety is depressing. I just think the schools need to take some responsibility.
