Most guns come from the factory with screw-in choke tubes these days for all gauges except .410. They mostly come with fixed full chokes and a couple with modified but that's about it with a few exceptions.

Why is that? Is it too difficult to make choke tubes for such a small barrel size? Do they think no one wants a choice of chokes in .410?

I've hunted lots with a .410 and know it's only effective out to about 25-30 yards or so even with a full choke. I have one with a fixed modified choke that patterns very well, but it would be nice to switch to a more open choke for hunting extremely thick terrain where shots are limited to 10 yards or even less.

So why don't we have that choice?

I just bought a Browning Cynergy in .410 and it has screw in chokes. My Mosberg pump has a fixed full choke. I wish the Mosberg had screw in chokes.

With the larger gauges, it has probably become expected by the consumer that all shotguns sold, regardless of price point, have screw in chokes. That consumer philosophy probably has not filtered down to the .410 yet.

Every target grade gun comes with choke tubes

There are many larger bore shotguns that come with fixed chokes

I have a bunch of 410's, about half are fixed choke. Some of my bolt action 410's even have adjustable choke. It just depends on how much you spend on the shotgun. The only one that I have that I wish had an adjustable choke is my T14. Would like to find someone that would make a screw on choke that resembles the birdcage that came with it.

Actually, some of the highest-priced 12 and 20 gauge guns come with fixed chokes - both target and live bird guns - reason being, they are "mission-specific" guns designed for one purpose, so having a fixed appropriate choke(s) makes sense as it is one less thing to think about

Example - Perazzi pigeon gun comes standard with its barrels choked IM/F - you can order whatever you want - but their history has shown that to be the perfect combination - for that purpose.................End result is that folks have different guns for various purposes, much the same way that rifle shooters have different rifles for varmints, deer, big bear, etc......

Mike orlen at choke and chamber music does screw in chokes for .410. Prices are very reasonable and he does nice work with quick turn around times.

That's assuming there's enough "meat" on the barrel to do so. I took a 20 ga. Weatherby Orion O/U out to him a couple of years ago for the same purpose, but he was unable to do it. So, I just had him open them up to IC/IC. All worked out in the end. Mike does good work at a very reasonable price. :)
