Poor man's snap caps

I know I am not the first person to think of this but I tried it and it works. I took an fired 9mm case and experimented with filling the primer cup with different materials to make a cheap snap cap. I tried eraser material but it is too soft so I ended up useing some rubber from the sole of an old shoe. That rubber is very tough and doesn't even dimple after many dry fires.

Just though I would pass on this tid-bit of info for my fellow cheap skates out there.

The best thing is, you can now make a snap cap in any caliber for free.

I do the same thing and find that Shoe Goo works really well. Plus after a few hundred snaps, it can be easily refilled.

I used a piece of auto tire rubber in 12 ga. shells several years ago for snap caps. They're still good. I've been impressed with the durability also.

Clean the primer pocket, and use some silicone caulk. Trim the caulk level with a razor blade.

I've got a buddy that's been using old chunks of tire instead of he primer. They seem to last a good long time!

I bet car tire rubber is much better than shoe rubber. My new batch will be made with tire rubber. My friend has a Jeep with big tires, he won't notice if I take a few small chunks.

The rubber of a tire's inflatable interior seems resilient enough to withstand repetitive punching.


At least it's cheap enough to replace as often as necessary

Is it best to glue whatever youre using into place or just force a piece in?
What holds up?

I just made some with tire rubber and they do hold up better. They don't get a hole in them like the softer rubber does. You will have to super glue the tire rubber because it is harder and won't stay in place like the softer rubber will.

So far, this seems to work the best. Also, let the rubber stick out a little bit past the back of the case to provide a little extra cushion for the fireing pin. Not too much or it might lock your slide closed.
