Well , that was a BLAST today !
I could not get the Rogers and Spencer to myself all day , Pops fell in love with it an that's all she wrote :D .............
We mostly shot Wart Hawg loads all day , ran through one pound of Goex 3F powder , plus whatever was in my flask originally :D
The Rogers and Spencer proved to be the superior firearms of the day out of the three BP revolvers , that thing is ACCURATE :D ..

Here's my Pops ! Another Wart Hawg lover , he wasn't quite ready for the 38 grains of Goex first shot , he was totally impressed with the recoil on the Rogers , hee hee hee , I didn't tell him how much powder I put in it ( MAX ) .

The Gal and her 1911 Kimber at fun , damn she's a good shot ! Dont she know these cartridge guns are just a fad ?

And me with the Walker and Dragoon and the elusive Rogers when I could get at it !
Note loading lever drop at 60 grains , hee hee hee .

The Dragoon at 50 grains !

The Rogers , what a ripper gun !

What a great day , all I can taste is Black Powder and Moly Grease , the fragrance of the GODS .

Cheers , thanks for everyone that bought my guns , this day was possible because of you ! Dad really enjoyed himself , and so did we .
Das Jaeger , now go out and shoot something !

Alan, I can't believe the amount of recoil those things generate!! Looks like you guys & gal had a great time.
Trying to get my bride out when she gets back. Years ago she did enjoy it.

Man, I can't tell you how glad I am for you to share this with your pop!!! Never had the chance with mine although we talked about it some. Didn't get the last few pic's...but R&S RULES !!! Get a brimmed hat and a horse....or get a haircut, Hickock never wore a baseball hat LOL!!!

Great Range Report

Hardrock Cafe which one did ya get to ... I been to the one in Universal City near Burbank, CA... Was on a first date that lasted 8 years.

Xlint Range Report, it don't get no better than that.

Can't help but love them 1865 Rogers&SPencers .44's ... they are almost like cheatin' when you use one...

Hee hee hee

Whats you mean get a hair cut ! I am a freekin Semi-Hole ( Seminole ) Indian , dude :D .... Jesus and me got it right , you need to grow your hair is what the deal here is :D . Ummmmmm , Hickock had very long hair too :D . He also would have worn a baseball cap if there was baseball back then , and he sure as heck wouldn't have rooted for the damn Yankees either :D
Head Set sound protection he probably would have dismissed though or shooting glasses , which I actually remembered to wear this time :) ....
Oh , and I got two Iron Horses , does that count , and a wide brimmed hat too :D , see !
100_0872.gif ---------------

Smokin_Gun , got my Cafe jacket at Kuala Lumpur on a trip to Indo China to
see my Pops years ago when he lived in Indonesia and Malaysia when he worked for GE Aircraft . And your right about the R and S , it is just as accurate as most any Modern Cartridge target grade revolver for sure , and better than most :D . It really likes 26 grains-ish but even with 38 grains it still shoots better than me .

------------------

Tom , definately take your Lady out again when she gets back . I know for me that is the one thing me and my gal enjoy about being together the most pretty much is shooting together , especaily the 1911's . I did bring my Sprinfield Loaded Longslide 6" 1911 too , bad part was she shot around ten magazines full out of it and now wants it :banghead:........Never gonna happen !
Pops shot it too , Bull Bull Bull Bull , we got schooled yesterday Tom from the Old man . Oh , he wants my gun too :banghead:

Tom , these .44 BP guns kick or recoil just as much as any other guns , Modern or not , but its more like a large rolling KaaaaaBooooooom when she goes off rather than the punishing Pow of a Modern powder revolver . Doesn't hurt one bit like Modern though , they roll much nicer when they go off instead . The concusion of 50 or 60 grains in the Walker and the Dragoon is very impressive though , especailly in the semi enclosed gallery we shot in . Believe me when I tell ya the first shot by me with the Walker with 60 grains yesterday got everyone on the ranges attention , with respect mind you :D . The 3rd Model Dragoon has an even stronger Bark . Just realize that those guns shoot a Musket size charge of the Enfield or Smith Carbines of the day . Lots of fun Tom , you need one , or two . Seriosuly though , 50 grains in the Dragoon gets your attention , and everyone elses .
100_0959.gif

We took pops out for Supper later that night to Red Lobster too and talked guns and the Range trip the whole time pretty much while eating . Was a great day . Even after sucking down countless Prawns , Crabs , and Lobsters , I can still taste the Holy Black in my throat :D ...... There aint one damn thing on Earth I would have rather done yesterday , thats for sure .
I cleaned all four of my guns by 10:00 PM last night too , safely tucked back away in thier glass houses and the 1911 returned to my Headboard on my bed , ready for any wayward "stupid" Gang Bangers .

Cheers , Das Jaeger

OK what was that contraption that your ladys had?¿? J/K

Your dad looked like had was having a ball "no pun intended" there with ya & I may have to save my $$ to get me one of those R&S pistols & then try to pry my brothers hands away from my Dragoon.

Sounds like as thought y-all had a great time.

Voodoochile

Contraption / The gun ?
If so , then it's the Limited edition Kimber Patriarch , 90% engraved model , 250 made , $1,200 plus tax on sale , nice gun , but not impressed with it's accruacy , yet , it only has 500 rounds through it though , but my Springfiled shoots circles around it :D As you can see from her target she was shooting
4" to 5 " groups at 50 feet off hand, then she started shooting sitting down , but only cause she was tired , she shot 250 rounds by then , what a gal !

And yes , get a Rogers for sure , the only people that know there accuracy are the owners of them they are truely awsome :D

Contraption/loading stand , what are you talking about ?

Das Jaeger

I was joshing ya on the slab sides she's shooting :D I have 2 my self, a Colt m1911A1 built in 1942 for the U.S. Army with only springs replaced in it & my wife has a Mut that I built for her:
Essex frame
Colt 1991 Slide
W/C trigger, detent, hammer, Barrel, link, springs, firing pin & pin stop, extended ejector
E/B extended Slide stop, Bevertail grip safety, extended thumb safety
Rose wood grip panels
The rest I don't remember but the recoil is different on her piece than my stock military one I carry which Moma likes & it likes those Hydrashoks where mine is still a ball lover.

Had to give ya a little ribbing :D

I have a Ithica 1911A1 that somebody did a lot of work on even has S&W revolver sights, great shooter but I'd like to own it untouched just as it was during WW 2.

Das Jaeger wasn't there a fix or something to keep the loading lever secure? I a gun fight that would not be a good thing. Impressive for sure showing the recoil..

Yeh

there is trick to the loading lever spring, just haven't done it and not sure I will , its the WALKER man , good as is , one shot one kill :D

Das Jaeger re Walker latch fix:

To repost an answer from 1997 CAS-L: " File a small notch in the business end of the latch spring so there is a
small "step" that engages the loading lever. (Frank Leaman suggested this
approach years ago.)
Tex, SASS #4"

Frank Leaman is a genius and card shark/magician. I've met him.
I've done this on both of my Uberti Walkers and neither has dropped a latch in about 5 matches I have shot them in since. The "step" is pretty touchy. If you make it too deep the latch won't come down at all and if there is too little step the fix won't work. The business end of the spring is rounded and you take a little off the upper end (toward the barrel) so when the spring snaps in place as the lever is lifted there is a more abrupt lip that it has to climb over for the rammer to come down. I bought an extra spring from Uberti before I got out the file.
Another suggestion is to lighten your loads to lessen recoil. If you insist on shooting heavy loads (50-55grs FFFg) if you are lucky all you will get is a crushed wedge that opens up the gap. You'll think your gun is really blasting but all you are getting is lost power blowing out the cylinder gap. New wedges will be in order. If you are unlucky, you will get the cylinder pin backing out of the frame or stretching of the wedge cutout. Lots of $$$ to fix. Drop the load down to 35-45grs.
Another way to reduce the recoil is to change to FFg powder. It is slower but has a smoother pressure peak.
A third suggestion is to hold the gun more firmly to prevent barrel lift from recoil. I'm not sure what effect that will actually have. If you DON'T grip the gun firmly the barrel tips right down due to the weight.
My Walker load is 44grs of FFg+lube wad+.454RB+grease on top. It's called a .44-44.

Thanks , thats the fix I am aware of too , just too lazy to get around to it truthfully :D ...I have often pondered doin a Dragoon mod to it someday instead though , latch it and be done with it . I may not get around to doin either fix though :D ..........
There is no problem getting 60 grains in a Walker , whoever said that you can't , you can do it , once :D , its 55 after it's fouled though , hee hee hee , at least for me . :D
You'll also notice on a Walker that the loading ram is shaped for Conicals not for roundballs , you'll get even less powder in the BEAST usin those . It was designed to shoot conicals , and it was designed to use 2FF back in the day .
Probably a smarter choice of powder as you pointed out if your going BIG :D .
Even a day later my Pops is still going " I sure like that big ole gun " :D .

Phantom Cpt .

Familiar ? I have had that for ten years , built it from my head ( it's wood too :D ) , not from anyone elses design . Its Teak from my old skiff :D
I cannot imagine loading without one ? I used to though when I first got into this fun sport :banghead: For years no less !

Cheers , Jaeger

Thats great, I'm jealous. I've been trying to get my "pops" out for years now with less and less success. I guess things hurt more than he lets on but I keep trying. Pheasants, Skeet, Targets, anything just to bring a smile and make a memory.

Best wihes to all,

Broadbill

Hey BroadBill

Your probably right about the pain , our Ole Men are mighty proud arent they :) .
Actualy kinda tough watching um squint with pain as they walk or get out of the truck or car , and you know darn well they hurt .
Keep trying to get your Ole Man out with ya though , its a memory I will never forget , untill I myself get Alzheimers too :D , God forbid , but I probably will too , it is hereditary dont ya know .
I have been fortunate to have had MANY MANY MANY hunting and shooting experiences with my Ole Man though , but this last trip was the most important and fun one I have ever had with him .

If I were you , I would call him and tell him were going and when ! Seriously , you'll kick yourself when he's gone if you dont do that .

Never seen my Pops cry my enitre life till last night when we dropped him off and said see ya later at the airport  .....

I highly recomend you make those memorys happen for ya or you'll really feel terrible , call him today .

Wow!! Great minds must think alike!! Here's a design me and my Dad came up with (before he passed, miss you Pop!) that we thought was completely original. Apparently not eh?? It's amazingly close to your design just executed a touch differently :what:
