I was driving home from work about 10pm last night, along I-65 South, just south of Nashville, TN, about 2 miles from my exit, when I had a very bad experience.

As I'm cruising along at about 80-85 mph, a little white car comes flying by me and cuts right in front of me, close enough for me to have to tap on the brakes. I flashed my high-beams, as a signal to him that he almost hit me. My exit was coming up, so I merged into the right lane, passing him as I did so. When I passed him, I see him giving me the one-finger salute. Next thing he does is fly past and cut in front of me again. Again, I briefly flashed my lights (not the best move, but I didn't expect the result it garnered). The driver of the white car slams on his brakes. I kind of thought he'd tap on them, to scare me. I wasn't tailgating him, mind you, he had just cut in front of me, with about 10 feet seperating our vehicles. I slammed on my brakes, causing traffic behind me to swerve around us. I immediately picked up my cell phone and began dialing 911. As I'm doing so, he leans out his window, shaking his fist and yelling something. He even started to get out of his car, in the middle of the interstate!

I put my truck into reverse and started backing away from him, intent on leaving the interstate via the ramp. He saw what I was planning to do, so he got back into his car, sped ahead and pulled off to the side. He began to open his door, like he was hoping I'd stop and get out. I passed him, so he got back in and sped ahead of me again. As we made the turn at the light, he cut me off again and stopped his car in the middle of the road, pointing to a nearby Waffle House parking lot. I guess he thought I'd get out and fight him or something.

While this is happening, I'm explaining to the police dispatcher what happened and where we are located. She's a State Police dispatcher, so she transfers me to the local jurisdiction. Just as that dispatcher comes on the line, one of the local cops passes in his cruiser. I immediately pulled away from the idiot in the white car and followed the cop car, flashing my headlights to get his attention. The cop saw me and quickly pulled over. I approached the officer and told him what had transpired, giving him the tag number of the car.

Like I told the officer, I was concerned that this idiot would follow me to my house or slam into my truck, forcing me into a defensive situation. Unfortunately, I didn't have a weapon with me. I had gone to IL for a wedding this past weekend and hadn't been home since returning. Therefore, my CCW piece was sitting snugly in the safe.

My plan when this escalated to the point it did: call the police, report the incident, and ask for a police officer to meet me ASAP at the firehouse down the street. There was no way I was going home with this beligerent individual following me like he was doing. There was also no way I was getting out of my truck, unless there was a cop present. I also didn't want to drive around all night, with this guy chasing me.

Thankfully, it turned out well. I think that when he saw me chase the cop down, he did a U-turn and went back to the interstate.

I did learn some lessons. One, stop flashing my lights when some idiot demonstrates his stupidity. Two, carry a dang handgun in the truck at ALL times. I normally do so, however, it is illegal to do so in IL. So, I guess I'll just have to be very careful not to get into situations where IL cops have to search my truck.

Of course, if I had a handgun, I wouldn't have brandished it over a case of road rage. However, if he had slammed into my truck, disabling it, I can see where it may have been necessary to use lethal force to stop him from being a threat. Like I said earlier, thankfully, it turned out well.

Glad you're OK after all that. May I recommend welding a sharpened piece of angle iron to the chassis of your car, to serve as a lance? It's probably even legal in Illinois! :D

The only thing you did wrong was to "flash" the guy. It served no purpose except to express your annoyance. Grumbling, "What A JACKASS" under your breath is nearly as satisfying.

While you may not have your sidearm at hand in IL you could have carried it in a secured way without the ammunition available. When you crossed into civilized territory you could have pulled over and retrieved your weapon and loaded it and carried it the rest of the way home.

OEF...I live in Nashville (Inglewood area). The last time I had a similar experience, I had flashed my lights for the same reason...and got almost the same reaction....and it was the only time I didn't have my pistol (three year stretch). Last time , too. I don't flash now. Let the creep go. Its not worth it.
Mark.

You can transport a handgun in your vehicle in Illinois if it is unloaded and enclosed in a case...just an FYI.

Amen. I just recently got this through to my wife. She liked to show her annoyance with other people's driving. When she did it once with me in the car I asked her, "Now what would you do if that guy slammed on his brakes and got out of his car with a gun?" :uhoh:

I'm amazed at how my patience has increased since I started carrying.

Many might consider this escalation and it probably is but it's always worked for me. Lately though I've been questioning this tactic's wisdom even though it has always worked.

Assuming one does have his weapon in the car do the following:

When you're in a position ahead of the person that is harassing you and are pretty sure he/she can see what you're doing just lean over and open the glove box while driving. Resume normal driving position. Hell you don't even have to actually open the glove box just look like you are.

In 38 years of driving (since I was 15) there have been 3 occasions where some nut job has harassed me on the road. In all three the above stated action resulted in an immediate departure of the harasser.

It's probably not the smartest action to take but it does work if one can't get rid of the nut job. Of course if the nut job is armed too one could be setting one's self up for a major confrontation. YMMV...

Mine as well, common sense gets bumped up a few notches at that point.

I remember one time an 18 wheeler almost hit me when I was passing him
to get into a right hand turning lane. I'd like to think he did not see me but
what he did after made me think otherwise.

It seems we both were going to be turning down the same road, he pulled up
behind me about 3" from my bumper (or so it seemed) while I was waiting for
the light. When we turned onto the street I easily put a good deal of space
between him and myself but that did not last. It is a 45 mph road and I was
going a little over 55 and caught right up in a hurry. Then for some reason
he starts goosing me. Now I'm in an old Chevy truck, big V8, full-size, big tires
but I'm still just a bug on a windshield to him. He pulls up real close then
backs off, pulls up again closer then backs off, pulls up even closer then
backs off. I thought this mad man was going to hit me, even if it was on
accident (just having fun messing with me) I'm still screwed.

..... Oh did I mention I was going to the range?

I reached over and opened my bag... it was in the front seat, and funny,
the top gun available was my Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum stainless with a
7.5 on her. I just raised it so it could be seen in through my back window.

Odd thing, he must have lost power or something because we had about
a 1/4 mile (and growing) between us real fast.

Whether to display / brandish a firearm under such circumstances is a very difficult call.

I recall an incident a few years ago in Massachusetts where a nurse was being aggressively tailgated by a TT and she displayed a pistol to get the guy to back off. He called the cops, she was arrested and prosecuted and lost her permit.

As I recall the truck driver had an unsavory record, it didn't help her in the least.

Food for thought.

Sounds like the drivers on the ILL interstates are just as bad as I remember.

TBL, this was in TN, not IL. Normally, drivers here are pretty decent, compared to other places I've been such as Boston, NYC, or Detroit.

Mine too.

In retrospect, I think before I decided to carry I was living in a sort of fantasyland that someone else wouldn't really pull a gun on me, with a corollary that a 911 call would fix things. With that fantasy, arguing with strangers doesn't seem terminally stupid.

Once I wised up a little and opened my eyes, well, now I'm polite yet wary, instead of impolite and complacent.

Better to learn slow than not at all, I guess.

OEF, some people are in a hurry to get to their funeral. As someone who deals with these situations day in and day out (I work for the alleged a-holes), let it go.

People who allegedly drive like that are fools looking to destroy someone else's life. They are angry with their crappy job, their fat wife, their whiny kids, mad at themselves for sleeping in high school and their miserable life in general and want to vent their frustrations on the next person that "offends" them.

Down at the jail, they will whimper and cry about their miserable life and tell me how it wasn't worth it, if only they could go back. Don't fall into their trap.

Or, as my father would say, don't wrestle with a pig. You get dirty and the pig gets to drag you down to his level. :D

"Don't wrestle with a pig - you just get muddy while the pig enjoys it."

The best rule of thumb I can think of is; if you have enough justification to brandish, you have enough justification to shoot or the corollary; don't draw a gun until you have provocation to use it [legally].

Brandishing a gun will have one of 3 effects:

1. Other guy sees your gun, so he draws his and opens fire (remember, he thinks he's in the right ... so he'll claim self defense)

2. Other guy sees your gun, breaks off and calls the po-po to report "a maniac waving a gun around" and you get to explain to the nice police officer what happened (while laying face down on the ground wearing a pair of lovely stainless steel bracelets...probably lose your CCW piece and your CCW card).

or

3. You scare the bad guy and he leaves you alone.

2 out of those 3 options suck.

My Grandpa used to say; "Never start a pissing contest with a prick"

I'm amazed at how my patience has increased since I started carrying.
I've noticed that too...I call it Gun Zen

I guess when you realize your decisions carry the weight of life and death you learn patience.

I too had that dillusion ... it got cured by 1) punk kid pulled a gun on me, took my money and my watch and 2) I found him a couple weeks later working as a busboy at an Outback Steakhouse and when I called the detective he said they weren't going to do anything about him. When I complained Detective Worthless said I'd better hope nothing happened to him now :scrutiny:
