Post Pics Of Your "sniper Rifle" (.308) Thread

Putting a scope on a bolt action (or any other action type) rifle and painting it does not make it a 'sniper' rifle. It does confuse the people who think you shouldn't be allowed to have any firearm into thinking all scoped rifles are evil sniper rifles.

Sunray,

Those people who think we shouldn't be allowed to have any firearm are obvious confused in the first place, so there will be no placating them no matter what you do. As for myself, I prefer to refer to these rifles as "tactical rifles".

I call mine a Long Range rifle, as I am not a sniper. But it doesn't bother me of people call it a sniper rifle. Only pinko anti-gunners hide under their beds and worry about sniper rifles.

To (mis)quote Robert Heinlein: "There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous men."

Great guns guys!

Guntech- If you don't mind me asking, how much ($) do you have into that thing? Was it cheaper than buying an AI?

Mute - that is my dream gun! Great stuff

Here is my nail driver.... it shoots impressive groups at 250 yards for a semi!
It also has a Leupold Vari-x III 50mm on it now... the pics are older.

It makes a hell of a Coyote gun... if someone wanted to be creative it could be an Urban tactical Precision rifle... maybe? lol

No offense but does it really matter how people want to refer to their guns on here? I agree if you're talking to an anti then saying you have a sniper rifle might be the wrong thing to say. But on here I don't think it really matters, besides many of the gun models posted on here really are used as sniper rifles by LE and military, so I don't see that people are wrong in saying that they own a sniper rifle.

Also I would imagine that any anti who would see any of the guns from this thread would automatically assume "evil sniper rifle" anyway.

Gun-banners have already thrown scoped bolt-action rifles under the bus with the "sniper rifles" (and the .30-30 under the bus with "armor piercing" ammunition). No sense in us arguing about what we call them here-- nwilliams is right that many of the rifles posted here are either issued or used as military or LEO weapons. Just because I'm not an F-1 driver doesn't mean I can't own an F-1 "race car."

Now let's get back to the rifles!

True, but then again this thread specifically put "sniper rifle" in quotes to indicate the generic use of the term. So yes, my post is of my long-range .308 rifle. I'm not a sniper.

However, if a sniper picked up a Mossberg .22 and used it with their skill set, then wouldn't that make the .22 a "sniper rifle"?

Ok, so it's not perfectly what I would deem a "sniper rifle" (since some seem uptight about use of the term), but is close enough that I wouldn't object to actually using it as such. Mil-dot scope, thousand-yard accuracy, bipod ... does the job fine.

Stover954rr

I did this rifle a piece at a time, which helps spread the pain. I was lucky to get a new, never fired 40X for a good price. Here's the brealdown - from memory

Remington 40X repeater - $1300
AICS stock - $700
Jewell Trigger - $200
Bolt Mod - $95

So only about $2100

Add $200 for rings and base (TPS) plus $1300 for the Leupold MkIV M3 10x fixed.

So about $3600 including optics - not bad as such things go and this rifle shoots 1/4 MOA. A 'real' AI can run $5000 without optics.

The only change I would make if building one today, I would start with a Surgeon action like the rifle Mute posted. You can build a very repectable rifle on an AICS without paying the AI premium. My first AICS was nothing more than a Remington PSS in an AICS, and it shot very well for a rifle that cost about $1300 total (less glass).

Here's another tactical rifle. I've gone back to using a modified GI fiberglass stock on this one, as it is 2 pounds lighter and i intend to take it deer hunting. The JAE-100 does look cool though.

GunTech- Wicked setup. How do you like that Jewell trigger? How is the pull? I was expecting a much steeper price on that build, well done! That will probably be my next build (or a Rem700). I want to build a nice bolt gun.

cahoots on the Leupold scope too... I bit the bullet and gave the extra money for the Vari-x III 50mm (being a recent graduate from grad school I am kind of in the pot financially lol).

Thanks for fixing my pics... what did I do wrong?

My "Budget" .308 long range rifle:

NEF "Survivor", 22" bull barrel .308 with Simmons 3x9x40. (under $300 w/scope)

It is one of my three .308's. The others are a Saiga and a Enfield 2A1.

PAPACHUCK, Just curious, what kind of groups do you get out of your survivor? I've been told the handi-rifles and their kin tend to be possessed of accuracy all out of proportion to their price.

Rhe Jewell trigger is unbelievable. I have mine set at 1 pound. Some have reported problems with Jewells in the field, but so far I haven't had any issues. Just keep them clean.

I like the Leupolds, but my next scope is a USO ST-10. It is actually going to cost about the same for the USO fixed 10x as for a Leupold MkIV M3 10x. And the USO is being built to my specifications with MOA reticle, 1/2 MOA EREK knob and 1/2 MOA windage.

The ST10 is a very good deal, with a base price of $895 and real Schott glass optics.

Well, I feel like a piker having a Savage FP10 in .308 compared to some of these beautiful rifles.

But, it shoots real well with 168 grain Federal Gold Match and my handloaded equivalents. From prone, it's done less than 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I can live with that for around $500.

Today, in the rain, it was doing under an inch at 100 yards with water running in my face. :D

I think I'll keep it.

Some wont think of it in a sniper role, but it drops the right load in to 1.3" at 100 and has a 4.25" clean trigger....

Some really nice sticks posted here, this is a Savage10 FP, in .308 with 1/10 twist 26" barrel, 8-40x54 scope, with side focus 30 mm tube, Custom Shop.

The Choate ultimate varmint stock is solid and very adjustable to individual shooters, have added length to the butt stock since this pix was taken.

Im looking to try out other stocks when time and money allows.

With 175gr SMK, this stick does well out past 1000rds, but most of my shooting is done 600 yards & under.

Don't feel bad, I too want a good bolt action, but until then I'd have to do with this one (the rifle in my previuos post, mated with some tape and grass)
