Post Pics Of Your "sniper Rifle" (.308) Thread

So you want a hunting rifle -with it's thin barrel and lightweight stock- with a Leupold long range precision optic? I probably won't be the only dude to say that doesn't make any sense. If long range is your goal then you're looking for a rifle of special application. Most people go with a Remington 700 PSS or a Savage 10FP with a better stock than the one savage puts on the rifle or their Choate thingy.

It's not nonsense, but it's certainly a niche long gun. This guy just wants something that's not a bull barrel with a 10 pound benchrest stock, that he can also use to reach "out there."

Reminds me of my CZ 550 UHR "Ultimate Hunting Rifle" in the safe (hunting gun with a long range/tactical scope):

yup, i want long range with wood stock. that scope (20x) might be too much. prob stick to 12x, nothing with a glossy finish.

that CZ 550 looks nice!

i've got about 200-220rnds(shot a couple thru the cetme) here. just wasting space unless I start shooting it.

Niche rifle is a good way to put it

And the niche is so small as to be almost completely theoretical...

But dang -- we're rifle loonies because we love 'em, not because we're trying to be the most practical guys in the world!

The downside is, a lot of guys want these niche guns and then don't practice. Having a $5000 gun capable of 6" groups at 1000 yds is nice, but it can instill an irresponsible sense of competency in someone who hasn't logged some hours at the range...

I don't think that scope there is as much as 20x, and if it is, I believe it is a variable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is a Nightforce 3.5-15x50, right? Certainly one of the most outstanding and versatile optics on the market today. Wish I had one.

I don't have photos.

But I do have a Rem 700 LTR with a Leupold Mk IV 3-9x and Ken Farrell rings/mounts, and Harris bipod.

Took it out today and did some fine 100yd shooting. It amazes how easy it is to get this gun to shoot "about" where you are aiming. I am not nearly as steady as I want to be, but it manages to get where I am aiming at 100 yds will relative ease.

I love what a .308 will do to a large watermelon.

This is a pic of mine.......( dreaming.......) as soon as I can find one anyway.

H&K MSG90  .308 extreme

If anyone has an extra one please e-mail!

You don't need a bolt to get the job done, up to 1000 m.

Oh, and I agree to Gen.Geoff - it's only a sniper rifle if it's emplyed by fellow with proper training, otherwise it's just a precise weapon. Novadays every other rifle with scope on it is called a sniper rifle.

Few guys here do get repeated hits on human torso size targets with the same type of rifle pictured, using M80 NATO ball, at 1000 m (1095 yards). Beat that.

Medusa, see my post above. We shot a 20" target at 1015 at the last tactical match. What loads are you using?

M80 FMJBT, standart NATO ammo, Lake City, 91. 146 +-1 gr bullet, WC 846 propellant. Ie same as used in 7.62 MGs and every other rifle in that cal, it's mass production cheap ammo, not some M118SP. Rifle itself is approx 2moa, ammo is 4moa or less. Nonetheless those repeated hits are grouped 1.5 moa and less.

My "beat that" remark was aimed at the try to take a mid-class semi-auto rifle with milsurp ammo and get it hit human sized targets at long ranges - constantly.

Guntech, that's an AI AE? I'd expect that kind of rifle to hit small targets at 1000m range. If not then the shooter is not up the task.

Long range on a budget

Arnold Arms Winchester 70 (.308) with Bell & Carlson stock

Bushnell Elite 3200 10X40 scope

Harris bipod

The rifle was purchased used without scope, rings, or bipod for $600. Nice custom barrel and extremely crisp trigger.

Why does everyone think a light barrel sporter is totally incapable of any long range performance? The elder .45Guy is amazing with his 1956 vintage model 70 featherweight with ancient Weaver 4X.

I guess no one told Sr. .45 that he needs a tacticool heavy barrel to do that type of shooting!

Bull barrels are nice, and probably do add rigidity in extreme cases, but a lighter barrel still works.

HOWA 1500 Varminter Supreme. Love it!!! One of the best rifles for the money. Out the door for $700. Grouping is at 100 yards, first outing after getting her dialed in.
