You gave it away. Midnight black stainless. I think this was S&Ws attempt at producing a blued gun for the police and security market, while dropping carbon steel. For whatever reason they continued with the blued carbon steel guns for another decade or more.

Close. Correct on the color!:) A 686 is Stainless with the 6 designating stainless as compared to say a 586.(carbon)

It was SW first attempt at "Tennifer" Melonite type coating It is stainless underneath. The coating did not hold up well so they discontinued it.

It is only worth something unfired with the box which fortunately I have.
 
Here's some not often encountered S&Ws:

586-4s chambered and barrel marked for the 38 S&W Special cartridge. They were produced on order for the Brazilian National Police. A few hundred over runs with 2.5", 4" and 6" barrels were sent to stocking dealers for sale to the public.

This 586-7 is one of only 150 made from left over parts S&W used on a special gun for the French Anti-Terrorist Police. It's a 6-shot with a front Tritium sight and a built in comp.
